Who is racing, when, and how to watch the Sunday, February 25th Val di Fassa Women’s World Cup super-G

Today was a powder day in Val Di Fassa, Italy, which unfortunately canceled the women’s World Cup super-G race. The crews worked hard to get the race rolling, but the track was deemed unsafe for competition. Going into this weekend, the women had three more super-G races to prove themselves before the World Cup Finals. With this cancellation and no updates yet on rescheduling, the athletes will only have two more chances to compete in the discipline.

The stakes are high as the competition remains incredibly close in the women’s super-G. Swiss athlete Lara Gut-Behrami holds onto the top in the World Cup Standings with 360 points. However, the race for the Globe is stacked, with a mere 34 points separating Gut-Behrami from Austrian Cornelia Hütter (355) and Italian Federica Brignone (326). Stephanie Venier of Austria is also in contingency for the top spot and will continue to battle during the next two races.

There have been five super-G races in 2024 and four different winners. Gut-Behrami has been the only racer to win two events, Altenmarkt-Zauchensee and Cortina D’Ampezzo. 2021 was Gut-Behrami’s first and only time racing on the Val Di Fassa super-G track, and she achieved 2nd place. Her close competitor, Federica Brignone, won that year by over five-tenths.

The absence of Italian Sofia Goggia who reigned victorious in the St. Moritz super-G leaves these last few races feeling incomplete. Nevertheless, the racers will have to continue to give it their all and hold nothing back to stand out in this intense competition.

52 skiers from 15 countries are on the start list for the Sunday, February 25th Val di Fassa super-G.

Nations Cup Standings

In the Nations Cup standings, the Austrian team has accumulated the most points in super-G, earning 1,111 points this season. Nonetheless, the Italians (974) and Swiss (931) teams are in tight contingency. This battle for the top continues to get more exciting, especially with one less attempt to gain points.

49 racers from 14 countries have scored 2024 World Cup super-G points. Austria has 16 women who have scored, Switzerland 11 and Italy 9. The United States has 6 and Canada has 2.

North Americans

Stifel US Ski Team athlete Lauren Macuga is currently the top ranked North American. She has been making a mark in super-G. With only ten super-G World Cup starts, she has been able to move up the ranks quickly. Her top result was a 10th-place finish this winter in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, which placed her ahead of the other North American competitors. She currently sits 22nd in the World Cup Standings and is eager to make her debut at World Cup Finals.

The injuries of the top athletes, Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) and Valérie Grenier (CAN), have presented an additional hurdle for both nations to secure a position within the top-5 of the 2024 Nations Cup Standings.

Isabella Wright has earned two top-30 finished this season and her recent race in Crans Montana stands out as her best performance of 2024 thus far, finishing in 17th. She aims to continue to increase her points and move up in the ranks during these final races.

Returning from injury this season, Jacqueline Wiles has unveiled her fearlessness and determination. Her super-G is still coming along, with one top-30 finish out of the five races, but she has shined in downhill, achieving a podium finish and four other top-15 results. She aims to continue to bring the momentum from downhill into her super-G racing during these concluding races.
