The Gold Nugget Maroon Clownfish is a unique and distinct variety of clownfish that results from a genetic mutation. As it matures, its white body transitions into a shimmering gold color with dark maroon fins and fluorescent orange trim. Though its appearance is unique, it is otherwise a Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish in all other aspects, including its care requirements, tankmates, and tank size considerations.

Captive-bred clownfish, including the Maroon Clownfish, are generally robust and suitable for novice and experienced aquarists alike. They can be kept in reef aquariums but are the most territorial of all clownfish species. These fish are sensitive to high levels of copper and should not be exposed to levels above .15.

Breeding captive-bred clownfish in the home aquarium is relatively easy. The larger of the pair will be the female, and the two fish will typically stay near each other. As egg-layers, they will deposit their eggs on flat surfaces and guard them against other tank mates. After 8-11 days, the eggs will hatch, and the fry must be reared in a separate aquarium with a diet of rotifers and baby brine shrimp.

The Gold Nugget Maroon Clownfish will eat almost any meaty food and herbivore preparations. When capturing these fish, it's important to avoid using a net as their cheek spines can become entangled. Instead, a specimen container should be used.
