Description

Ctenolucius hujeta is an oddity from Venezuela and Colombia. Despite being named for its resemblance to North American gar, this fish is in fact a Characin, the same order of fish to which Piranhas and Tetras belong. Hujeta gar reach a maximum size around 10". These predatory fish will eat anything that fits in their mouths (Which can be fish up to half their body length!) but are very peaceful with fish too big to be seen as prey. Thus larger cichlids, rainbowfish, catfish, etc make good tankmates for this graceful species. Can be maintained alone or in groups. Adults can be hard to wean off live food, but it is possible to get them on frozen foods.

These are juveniles, around 2-3" long.+
