Feeding: Best kept on smaller live and frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, microworms, and mosquito larvae. Though very small flakes and pellets are accepted, they should not be the staple of their diet
Notes: Blue-eyes are members of the order Antheriniformes along with rainbowfish and the neotropical silversides. The Blueback Blue-eye is truly euryhaline, able to survive in waters more saline than the ocean and is found in freshwater in the wild. In the home aquarium, it’s best to keep these fish in brackish conditions to keep them healthy. The Blueback Blue-eye requires high levels of filtration to thrive and needs a turnover of about 8-10 times tank volume per hour.
The Blueback Blue-eye is very peaceful but is also extremely timid and doesn’t do well when housed with larger or more boisterous tankmates. Because of this, it is best to keep them in specimen tanks where it is also much easier to breed them. Decor is largely unimportant; aquatic plants other than mangroves are not common in their natural habitat though they do appreciate having some cover in the tank to hide in or behind when necessary.
