Verlorene Liebesmüh (Love’s Labour Lost) by Heinrich Kley. Amazing cartoonist and social satirists from the 1900s.
My workspace is finally recovering from redecorating, I have reached my favourite part-rearranging my bookshelf. I bought this book during uni as quite a random buy, concentrating more on technique of style rather than content.
As I sat down with it properly today, I find out how brilliantly Kley illustrations pushes boundaries socially and politically, in a dark and yet humourous way. Without any accompanying text, apart from a title, you can read and dissect the messages. A punch at you from the book, even without much knowledge of the history surrounding the city and country at the time.
An artist to learn from indeed.
