After establishing himself as a leading man with 1983’s “Risky Business,” Cruise scored the biggest domestic hit of his career in last year’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” the sequel to 1986’s “Top Gun.” Delayed two years due to the pandemic, the film picked up an Oscar nom for best picture. Cruise returned to theaters this year for the first of two parts comprising the swan song for “Mission: Impossible” in “Dead Reckoning.” However, summer 2023 wasn’t so kind to franchises showing their age. Like the latest “Indiana Jones,” “Dead Reckoning: Part One” was a downgrade from the franchise’s previous heights, earning $172 million domestically and $568 million globally, well under the $220 million and near-$800 million haul of 2018’s “Fallout.” After the billion-dollar success of “Maverick,” it’s a jarring outcome that puts a ton of pressure on “Dead Reckoning: Part Two” to deliver for Cruise and Paramount in 2025.
