Craft Beer Review – Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel

Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel

Ayinger – Altbairisch Dunkel: Is a Munich Dunkel Lager brewed in Germany at a strength of 5 abv%, this dark lager was poured into a 22 oz beer glass from a bottle at home.

Aroma and Appearance: It pours a perfectly dark mahogany with 2 fingers of thick foam and some small bubbles in the middle of the glass. The aroma is toffee, malted chocolate, molasses, with hints of raisin and plum.

Flavour: It starts with a heavy dose of molasses and a deep nutty and earthy malted chocolate with some fig in there. The body is medium to thick, crisp and smooth and the aftertaste is quite earthy.

Overall Impression: This is really good stuff, has some nice complexity to it and very pleasant flavours.

Rating: I give it an excellent rating of 8/10, would not hesitate to buy this again.

Food Pairing: With the darker earthy notes I bet a mushroom brie would be the perfect pairing for something like this, or a steak with mushroom gravy.

I really like Ayinger, the stuff we import from them is a major step above the commercial offerings from Europe. Any other one’s from them worth trying please suggest in the comments section?
