Steen Skybolt

Steen Skybolt

In 1968, Lamar Steen was a teacher at Denver’s Manual High School. He thought his students could learn and apply math, science, and other skills by tackling a challenging real-world project. So he designed a new aerobatic airplane and coached his students as they built it. In the process, they acquired self-confidence and valuable experience that would help them gain access to better careers. The Manual High mascot is the Thunderbolt, usually shortened to “Bolt,” so the airplane became the Skybolt. With his students watching, Lamar Steen made the first flight in October 1970.
