First Spin: Jarryd James is back and sounding confident on 'Slow Motion'

A black and white 2019 press shot of Jarryd James

The Brisbane singer with a voice that could melt silver is back with his first new music in three years.

Jarryd James has released 'Slow Motion', a new single that reunites him with go-to producer Joel Little (together, they previously created the ARIA-winning 'Do You Remember', aka your #7 song in the Hottest 100 of 2015).

Penned together on a writing camp in Nicaragua (fancy!) before hitting the studio together in L.A., 'Slow Motion' is a song Jarryd says is about being apart from his wife in different locations and timezones. “It might be night-time where I am, and it’s daytime where she is," he says in a statement."

"The whole situation takes a toll on you when you travel as much as I do. It’s pretty taxing living in Australia and trekking to the United States so often. From there, the song just fell out of me as a natural discussion of how I felt.” Listen in below.

The track retains Jarryd's soulful vocals but he sounds stronger, singing in a lower register over sturdy RnB sounds with 808 beats and a sawing synth hook. He sounds more confident, which is exactly the aim.

“I want people to feel confident when they listen to me,” he says. “I want them to feel like they can shut the windows, close the doors, and let the music sink into them. The world is a noisy place these days. The one thing I love about music is you can shut everything out to it, feel confident, and be at ease."

Since the release of his 2016 EP, High, JJ has been in the studio working with producers Little and Malay - who contributed to his debut album Thirty One - as well as some new faces, including Andrew Wyatt (of Miike Snow) and acclaimed hip hop producers Clams Casino (A$AP Rocky, Vince Staples) and Cautious Clay (Logic).

He's also joining his old friend Matt Corby for a European tour. No word on Australian shows or album plans but we'll keep you posted.
