First Semler Edition. Pagination: [18] 464; [14], 474; [12], 716p. Contemp. German paste-paper boards, paper title labels, light rubbing, edges red, old dealer's stamps on paste-downs, signature of owner on t.p.s; light dampstain to outer edge in the third volume. Illustrations: Engraved port. of Bekker on t.p., folding plate in volume 3. Bekker was a Dutch precursor of rationalism; born at Metslawier Mar. 30, 1634; died in Friesland June 11, 1698. He studied at Groningen under J. Alting and in Franeker, where he was rector of the Latin school, was made doctor of theology, and preacher in 1666. Being an enthusiastic follower of the Cartesian philosophy, he published at Wesel in 1668 an Admonitio sincere et candida de Philosophia Cartesiana, and gave greater offense by his catechisms in 1668 and 1670. He was accused of Socinianism, although Alting and other theologians pronounced him to be orthodox. After many controversies, he accepted a call as preacher to Weesp, and, in 1679, to Amsterdam. The appearance of a large comet in 1680 induced him to issue a work against, popular superstition, which stirred up more commotion; and, in 1691, in De betoverde Wereld, published at Leeuwarden, he denied the existence of sorcery, magic, possessions by the devil, and of the devil himself. The consistory of Amsterdam instituted a formal process against him, and he was deposed July 30, 1692. "He was the last of the Dutch thinkers from Johan Weyer to Grevius who had kept Holland free from the abuses of the witch hunters. In 1691. he published his attack on belief in witchcraft, on the only logical basis possible: that spirits, either good or bad (the existence of which Bekker did not deny), could exercise no influence over human affairs; nor should seemingly paranormal effects be attributed to witchcraft." - [R.H. Robbins.]Semler of Hale (1725-1791)was ".well known as one of Germany's leading theologians, a founder of 'neologist' interpretation, an approach to Scripture that started with the assumption that the Bible was a human document, to be understood within a historical context. Many Lutheran readers would have also recognized Semler as the expert on modern demonology." [-H.C. Erik Midelfort, Exorcism and Enlightenment,2005]. "In the town of Kemberg, a woman had been accused of being possessed by a demon. This incident provoked Semler to write a series of works about demons in which he applied historical-critical method to the study of Hellenistic, biblical, and rabbinic sources. In discussing the relation of Jesus to demons, Semler constructed his accomodation doctrine. Jesus, according to this view, did not himself believe in the existence of demons, but he trimmed his teaching to fit the unenlightened minds of his hearers." Übersetzt aus: Anette Henriette Munt: The Impact of Dutch Cartesian Medical Reformers in Early Enlightenment German Culture (1680-1720). Thesis, London 2004.

The important first German edition of this famous refutation of many superstitions of the time. Originally published in Dutch in four parts 1691-93.Balthasar Bekker (1634?98) was a German-Dutch clergyman, theologian and philosopher. Bekker casts doubt over the ideas of spirtual powers and diabolical possession, drawing on the philosophy of Descartes and Spinoza. He especially critizises the witch trials that plagued northern Europe at the time. His denial of the power of the devil on earth got him into trouble with the church, but his contribution played an important part in early enlightenment and in the ending of witchcraft persecutions. Hardcover / Hardback.
Amsterdam, Daniel von Dahlen, 1693. 4to. Contemp. full calf. Raised bands. Remains of rich gilding on spine. Titlelabel gone. Spineends reinforced. Corners restored. Front inner hinge reinforced. Stamp on title-page. Small woodengraved portrait on title-page. 40,144,270,(2),195,(3),308,(4) pp. 1 engraved plate (Das Oldenburgische Horn). Light toning throughout, but clean and fine. First German edition (De Betoverde Weereld,1691) of Bekker's best known work in which he examined critically the phenomena generally ascribed to spiritual agency. He attacked the belief in sorcery and "possession" by the devil. Indeed, he questioned the devil's very existence. He applied the doctrine of accommodation to account for the biblical passages traditionally cited on the issue. The book had a sensational effect and was one of the key works of the Early Enlightenment in Europe. It was almost certainly the most controversial. Bekker became a heroic figure defying an army of obscurantists.

8°, 39, 135, 270 S., 1 Bl., 195 S., 1 Bl., 308 S., 2 Bll., 1 Holzstich-Portrait auf Titel, 1 Kupfertafel mit dem Oldenburgischen Horn im 4. Teil.

It caused a furor when it was first published in Holland and the firestorm quickly spread to Germany, France and England - where the book was translated and published within three years of its original appearance in Dutch. Bekker was a Reformed pastor who had caught the infectious disease of 'philosophizing' after the manner of Descartes and Spinoza - which, more than anything else, meant the freedom to reconsider received doctrine in the light of reason. Bekker previously had encountered difficulties with two of this earlier published works - an unconventional adult catechism [1670] and a book confounding the prevailing superstitions about comets [1683] - (there had been three spectacular sightings between 1680 and 1682).But nothing Bekker had previously written prepared the local clergy - or northern Europe - for the book that he published in 1691. Picking up on suggestions originally made by Descartes and Spinoza, The Bewitched World argued lucidly and effectively against the popular belief in spirits and the power of the devil over human beings claiming such beliefs were insupportable either by reason or by a careful reading of the Bible. It has been claimed that Bekker's book was such an effective attack on these ideas that he all but single-handedly caused the demise of the witchcraft trials and devil-based persecutions that had plagued northern Europe for much of the 17th Century. While it is easy to exaggerate the impact of Bekker's book, it is clear that The Bewitched World was a seminal work in the undermining of superstition, an early and powerful blow against the authority of the Bible, a significant instrument for the weakening of the Church's hold on men's beliefs, and a primary contributor to the liberation of thought across northern Europe. The Bewitched World appeared as four Books - the first two published in 1691 and the final two in 1693. These four books taken together were "the most monumental and comprehensive investigation of Satan, demonology, spirits, apparitions, magic, enchantment, and witchcraft - four volumes broaching the topic from every angle historical, philosophical, Scriptural, and judicial - ever written so far" (Israel, Radical Enlightenment, p. 379). And, their impact was similarly comprehensive and monumental. Contemporary vellum binding with light (but still gorgeous) hand lettering to the spine ("DR. BALTH. BEKKER Die Bezauberte Welt"). Binding with a bit of outer wear, but much less than one would expect in a book over 300 years old. There is a former owner's bookplate to the inside front cover ("Ex Libris E.G. Waller Amsterdam 1893"). All pages lightly and uniformly browned. A lovely copy of one of the major works of the Radical Enlightenment in the important German edition which did much to spread the message of this work that was published in the same year in Dutch.
