THE FIRST VIEW OF DC AND GEORGETOWN DRAWN BY GEORGE WASHINGTON'S FAVORITE ARTIST This excellent view is taken from above Georgetown on the District side, and shows Analostan Island (the former designation for Theodore Roosevelt Island) in the Potomac River with Georgetown in the background on the left. This watercolor gouache is clearly a companion in style and subject of The Potomac River Breaking through the Blue Ridge and Great Falls of the Potomac, both circa 1796-1797), combining as it does topographical detail with a Romantic atmosphere. Both of these works were purchased in January 1797 from Beck s agent, Samuel Salter. They were hung in the New Room at Mount Vernon, where they may still be viewed today. George Beck is one of the earliest professional English trained landscape painters in America. Among his pioneering depictions of the American wilderness , Georgetown and the city of Washington is an important and evocative portrait of the Nation s capitol at its peak. Beck and his wife emigrated to America in 1795, drawn to the same newly settled wilderness, which Beck so successfully portrayed in his. The couple settled in Baltimore, Maryland, where Beck first painted his views of the Potomac River and achieved a tremendous amount of success. His fandom was ignited by the backing of George Washington, and following those commissions he won the patron-ship of William Hamilton, a well-known patron of English and American artists. From there Beck s popularity skyrocketed, accumulating commission after commission. In 1798, Beck moved to Philadelphia and opened a drawing school for men and women to subsidize his income; while his wife opened a ladies seminary. Despite leaving there legacy on the bustling city, their stay in Philadelphia was short lived and they soon made their way towards the beautiful American Western Frontier (Pittsburgh, Niagara Falls, Ohio, Kentucky). "The newly settled wilderness held a great appeal for beck providing the opportunity of exploring relatively unspoiled nature while living in a social milieu where he and his wife could attract patrons and students. In Kentucky he developed a freer style, and his works increasingly celebrated the unspoiled richness of the frontier. They reveal his fascination with the subjective power and mystery of nature". Diese Angelegenheit gibt mir so viel Mühe [ ]". - Together with a copy of a printed speech given by Grimm on the centenary of Schiller's birth ("Rede auf Schiller", Berlin, Verlag der kgl. Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1859), inscribed by Grimm on the upper wrapper to his friend, the jurist and rector of the Humboldt University of Berlin, Adolf August Friedrich Rudorff. Also enclosed is a manuscript note in an unidentified hand itemising some remarks by W. Grimm for the printer ("Bemerkungen von W. Grimm für den Stecher", oblong 8vo, 1 page). - Letter with some small defects to edges. Formerly in the collection of the Berlin pianist and composer Ernst Rudorff, the son of Adolf August Friedrich Rudorff.

Je länger ich aufschiebe, desto älter werde ich und zu der arbeit ungeschickter. An den Schriftsteller und Publizisten Theodor Oelsner in Breslau, dem er verspätet für eine Sendung aus dem Nachlass des Germanisten Theodor Jacobi (1816-48) dankt: "Sie war gerade einige wochen vor dem antritt einer reise bei mir eingetroffen und als ich mich anschickte Ihnen zu schreiben, hatte ich unglücklicherweise Ihren brief in ein buch gelegt, das ich vergeblich suchte, ich entbehrte also Ihre adresse und mein gedächtnis versagte mir sogar Ihren genauen namen [.] Erst jetzt nach meiner heimkehr setzt mich Ihr zweites schreiben vom 26 aug. in den stand meine schuldigkeit zu erfüllen [.] Es ist, im drange vieler arbeiten und geschäfte, mir noch nicht möglich gewesen die empfangnen collectaneen genau anzusehen und zu ermessen, welchen gewinn ich daraus schöpfen werde. An den namentlich nicht genannten Apotheker, Unternehmer und Politiker Friedrich Witte (1829-1893), der ihm wohl ein Manuskript des Königsberger Literarhistorikers Alexander Jung übersandt hatte, welches Grimm ihm unbesehen zurücksendet, da er "so bedrängt mit arbeiten und geschäften" sei, "dass ich nicht die geringste zeit übrig habe es einzusehen; übrigens ist schon seit einigen tagen herr Jung in Königsberg von allem durch mich in kenntnis gesetzt worden, was ich für ihn thun kann. ich bedaure seine widrige lage aufrichtig und habe ihm den rath ertheilt, sich hier an die allgemeine deutsche verlagsanstalt zu wenden [.]". - Stellenweise unbedeutend fleckig.

Allerdurchlauchtigster allergnädigster König.Das hiesige Göthe Comité, dessen vorstand ich bin, veranstaltet vom 1 Mai an eine öffentliche ausstellung, in welcher bilder des dichters, ausgaben, autographa und andere auf ihn bezügliche gegenstände den augen des publicums dargeboten werden sollen. Da sich zu München ein berühmtes portrait Göthes von Stielers meisterhand befindet, so würde unserm vornehmen einen anderswoher unerreichbarer glanz bereiten, wenn Euer Königl. Majestät uns diese gemählde auf einige wochen anzuvertrauen und befehl zu dessen anhersendung zu ertheilen geruhen wollten [ ]"Joseph Stieler hatte das berühmte Portrait im Auftrag von König Ludwig I. von Bayern geschaffen. 1828 reiste er mit einem Empfehlungsschreiben des Königs nach Weimar, um dort die Vorarbeiten anzufertigen. Über den Aufenthalt Stielers in Weimar und die Portraitsitzungen geben die Tagebücher Goethes Auskunft. Beiliegend ein Portrait in Stahlstich (M. Voigt sc., beschnitten und am Rand leicht fleckig).

Final Shooting script for the 1973 film. The script supervisor's copy, with their photocopied annotations on virtually every page, bound as a presentation copy for director-producer Philip D'Antoni. Warmly inscribed by D'Antoni's wife Ruth to Philip on the front endpaper: "Father's Day / June 17th, 1974 / To my producer, friend, writer, musician, lover / Ever sincerely, Ruthie." Based on an original fictional original story by real-life NYPD officer Sonny Grosso, about the "Seven-Ups," a secret New York detective squad with unorthodox methods (of questionable legality). An informant for the squad is secretly behind a kidnapping scheme, with the kidnappers impersonating police officers. A masterfully executed script supervisor's document, with the legendary car chase scene in the film broken down frame by frame for nearly 30 pages. Set in New York City, shot on location in New York City, New York State, and Weehawken, New Jersey. Blue full leather binding with gilt titles and rule, and D'Antoni's name to the bottom right corner of the front wrapper in gilt. Title page present, dated October 27, 1972, with credits for screenwriters Albert Ruben and Alexander Jacobs, story writer Sonny Grosso and director Phil D'Antoni. Approximately 271 leaves, with last page of text numbered 7. Xerographic duplication, rectos only, with shooting notes bound in opposite their corresponding script pages. "La colonie a écrit en personne et émettant l'avis le plus défavorable car la maison en question a bénéficié pour l'heure d'une démobilisation importante." "Ces "colonies" ne sont guère lointaines. FIRST EDITION, OFFPRINT, of the first announcement of the successful use of anesthesia during surgical operations, one of the greatest discoveries of nineteenth-century medicine. A visitor to Boston, Massachusetts would be well advised to take a stroll to the Ether Dome at Massachusetts General Hospital to see the amphitheater where surgery without pain began. On October 16, 1846, dentist William T.G. Morton publicly performed a painless surgery through the use of general anesthesia, thereby transforming surgical medicine, and marking one of the greatest advances in medicine, one that not only liberated patients from pain, but enabled surgeons to perform more extensive operations. Offered here is the first edition offprint of the first announcement of Morton's seminal achievement as reported by Henry Jacob Bigelow in the November 18, 1846 issue of The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal , Vol. XXXV No. 16, pp. 309-316. Interestingly, the offprint omits the last seven paragraphs from the journal article critical of the patent-holders: Drs. Morton and Charles T. Jackson. The redacted paragraphs likely indicates the offprint was issued shortly after the journal. Offprint from: The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, vol. XXXV, No. 16. 8 pages. To his friend and protégé Maurice Morel, known as l'Abbé Morel, concerning a manuscript that has been saved from his "shipwreck disaster" and hopes to publish it "as it is" after everything "has been taken" from Jacobs: "Tout est donc au même ! Gloria in excelsis Deo. Merci au Seigneur d'avoir sauvé ce manuscrit de mon désastre de naufrage. Publions le manuscrit tel que puisque je n'ai rien d'autre, tout ayant été pris. Cependant je ne veux pas vendre le manuscrit et perdre mes droits. Que votre éditeur me propose un contrat que j'étudierai". - The touching letter is a testament to Max Jacob's desperate situation in occupied France and the importance of his Christian faith during this period. Whether Jacobs could have actually hoped for a publication under these circumstances is very doubtful. - Traces of folds.

4to. 2 pp. With autograph envelope. To his friend and protégé Maurice Morel, known as l'Abbé Morel, concerning a forthcoming publication of selected poems. Jacob asks Morel to insist with their friend, the theologian Jacques Maritain, to keep the inconspicuous title "Poémes choisis inédits" so as not to attract "hate and furor", as well as the information "chosen by l'abbé Morel". The second part of the letter concerns the contract, Jacob's dire financial situation, and the painter Jean Colle, who was currently in London and somehow involved in the projected publication. While there is no publication of Max Jacob entitled "Poémes choisis inédits", it is very likely that the anthology in question is identical with the "Morceaux choisis" published by Gallimard in November 1936. - The devout Catholic Jacob met the future priest Maurice Morel (1908-91) when he was taken in by Father Albert Fleureau in Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire for detoxification in 1921. Jacob dedicated his 1921 poem "Le Laboratoire central" to Morel and encouraged him to follow his second calling as a painter. In his art, Morel was decidedly modern and abstract. He opened the Catholic Church of France to non-figurative art, even facilitating the introduction of modern art to the Vatican Museums. - Traces of folds.

Jakob Probsts Landfrieden" war im Verlag Franz Schneider, Basel, erschienen; der Druckvermerk verzeichnet 1876 als Druckjahr. Papierbedingt etwas gebräunt und sehr wohlerhalten.

OFFERED WITH: TYPED LETTER, SIGNED, BY FRANÇOIS JACOB TO GUIDO PONTECORVO (October 29, 1962, "Institut Pasteur" letterhead). In the letter Jacob mentions "extremely exciting" experiments on the regulation of DNA replication. He concludes with a reference to the recent announcement of the Nobel Prize for Watson and Crick: "We all were pleased also about Jim and Francis. This should have been done 5 years ago.". Condition: Good+. On offer is a superb 1936 manuscript relic titled 'Fahrt: Lieder und Bilder' being one German soldier's patriotic paean to forgotten German wars and heroic songs. Handwritten by Jacob Winkel in Euskirchen Germany the soldier presents a very historical German perception of war and the songs of conquerors. This soldier had a passion for the very historical Lion of Brabant, which has a history dating back to the 11th century. [This may also be a clue to his background as in WWII the Brabant Lion was associated moreso with the Flemish Lion which is understandable as many Belgium produced many troops and even SS soldiers for Germany. They were incredibly anti-communist so most went to serve at the Russian Front.] There are more contemporary and lost songs, all in the context of the upcoming World War II. The notebook has 26 well filled pages and is illustrated by hand with historical notes which include the drawing of the sword and the harp with the words Platoff, refers to Count Platoff, general in chief; Hetman of the Don Cossacks refers to Matvei Platov who was the leader of the Don Cossacks and a feared commander of cavalry. Platov's tactics became famous in the 1812 French invasion of Russia, when his men lived off the land and constantly harried the much stronger French forces. Using the harsh Russian winter to its best advantage, Platov continually punished the beleaguered French infantry on its retreat from Moscow. There is a real photo postcard tucked in the notebook which we can assume was the author himself. A note on the back which we cannot translate may confirm. Overall the 7½ x 5 inch book is G+. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Manuscript.

Archive of material from the 1973 film belonging to producer-director Philip D'Antoni, including several draft treatments for scenes in the film, handwritten shooting schedules and filming notes, crew memos regarding filming and location scouting, cost reports on Twentieth Century-Fox letterhead, a German film pressbook, location shooting maps, a reference photograph of D'Antoni mapping out the film's famed car chase scene with toy cars on the set of the film, and a US one sheet film poster. Also included is a scrapbook compiled by D'Antoni containing fourteen photographs of D'Antoni during production (joined in several shots by his young children), six photographs of D'Antoni during press interviews for the film, a page of six photographs of D'Antoni on the set, and one color photograph of D'Antoni receiving a Distinguished Service Award from Rockland County in New York, where he lived at the time of production. Also included in the scrapbook are a substantial number of newspaper and magazine clippings, copies of articles and reviews, and other ephemera concerning the film. D'Antoni's sole directorial credit, based on an original story by Sonny Grosso, about the "Seven-Ups," a secret New York detective squad with unorthodox methods (of questionable legality). The film was shot on location throughout New York, in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx, and in New Jersey and Westchester County, with many locations used during production now demolished. Philip D'Antoni was a major figure in 1970s New Hollywood Cinema, as the producer of "Bullitt" (1968), "The French Connection" (1972), and this film. In a desperate and almost certainly exaggerated apology, Jacob laments his "appalling and tormented existence", his poor health and his "inescapable financial embarrassments" that "absorb" him: "Je ne sais comment m'excuser de n'avoir pas songé à notre rendez-vous. Je vis une existence atroce et tourmenté non seulement par mes malades [!] mais parl'inéluctables embarras financiers qui m'absorbent et nécessitent des courses fatals; il ne s'agit de rien moins que de la rupture de mon contrat et qui est mon unique moyen de vivre". - The "breach of his contract" and only means of livelihood that Jacob mentions in the end of the letter probably refers to his long litigation with an insurance company following a car accident in 1929. Dollars 550. John Jacob Astor''. Some very minor edge tears and chips, but generally very good condition. The sum of $550.00, in 1816 was a huge sum of money! An exceedingly difficult autograph to find on the market, and this one. in the form of a check, would make an outstanding addition to any collection centering on financial history.

Embrassons nous » Il est difficile de connaître l identité du protecteur de Max Jacob. Ce dernier n ayant jamais dévoilé de noms, plusieurs de ses amis peuvent toutefois être considérés comme des « protecteurs » au sens où ils donnent à Max Jacob des informations cruciales car étant à des places stratégiques. En l espèce, Max Jacob a été accusé de « complot juif » car il recevait beaucoup de monde à l été 1942, il s en ouvre auprès de Conrad Moricand, alors secrétaire particulier de Georges Oltramare. Jusqu à la démission de Moricand à la moitié de l année 1943 il est de fait possible de considérer Moricand comme un « protecteur ». Max Jacob est finalement arrêté le 24 février 1944 par trois membres de la Gestapo d Orléans. Il meurt au camp de Drancy le 5 mars suivant. Raymond Trillat est un graphologue de référence pour Max Jacob, qu il consultait en plus de son graphologue attitré, Jean Tuset. Notons qu à propos des analyses graphologiques de Trillat, le poète y voyait d ailleurs un apport de l astrologie « je ne crois pas que ce soit par les manuels que Trillat soit parvenu à une science où il me paraît novateur Il y a plutôt là un don de la médiumnité, mais surtout de l observation et de l attention » (cf. [SATIE] JACOB, Max (1876-1944) Lettre autographe signée deux fois « Max » et « MX », aux époux Salacrou S.l.n.d [4 juillet 1925], 2 p. in-8° Tout juste rentré d Italie, le poète réagit à la mort du compositeur Érik Satie « Les chéris chéris. Je vous aime tous les deux et je vous écris pour vous le dire en deux petits mots très courts : il y avait deux cent lettres et paquets dans un panier. Je pêche au hasard : j en tire une puis une autre. Mais ma journée de vingt et une réponses est faite et je me repose pendant que vous êtes deux anges chéris et que vous serez bientôt des anges chrétiens ce qui sera infiniment beau. Je ne peux pas analyser le sentiment qui me prend ici : l horrible poids de la destinée qui m interdit les lieux où l on pêche, les monastères orgueilleux et pompeux et les villes où l on blesse les amis tous les soirs dans le couloir la satisfaction de la paix des champs dans leur laideur, et la joie des visages doux de la maison de l horreur de tous ces malheurs qu on touche : les veuves, les parents pauvres, les maladies, les infirmités que le voyage oublie si vite dans la vie d esthète. Si je puis parvenir à travailler, je resterai ici pour la pénitence de mes fautes. Au fond j aime ces gens. J ai des amis ici. Au revoir. Je vous embrasse. Je vais en finir avec mes cent dernières lettres. Il y a des choses terribles à « solutionner » dans ce paquet Max Oh ! Satie ! Cauchemar ! Le célibat et le désordre qui se paient. Mx » Cette lettre constitue l une des rares confidences contemporaines de la disparition du musicien : Érik Satie, tombé malade durant le premier semestre de l année 1925, est hospitalisé à l hopital Saint-Joseph. Il reçoit entre autres la visite de Max Jacob. Après plusieurs années de consommation excessive d absinthe, le compositeur meurt à l age de 59 ans d une cirrhose du foie. Les relations entre les Salacrou et Jacob sont extrêmement affectueuses, ce qui explique l incipit de la lettre. À la lecture du texte, on peut supposer que les Salacrou on soit acquis une gouache soit aidé à en acheter une, ce qui expliquerait le nombre important de lettres en souffrance du côté de chez Max Jacob. Excuse ma brièveté et crois moi fidèle Max » 1- Il s agit bien du peintre de l abstraction lyrique Jacques Doucet (1924-1994) cofondateur et membre du mouvement CoBra 1948 et ami intime de Max Jacob. 2- Gaston Jacob, frère aîné de Max, est arrêté en 1942 à Quimper. Il meurt en déportation à Auschwitz l année suivante. Figure centrale de l avant-garde montmartroise et montparnassienne, converti en 1915 au catholicisme après avoir eu plusieurs visions, Max Jacob quitte Paris en 1936 pour s installer à Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire dans le Loiret. Il y mène une vie monacale. Ses travaux poétiques et médiations, en partie reprises par Pierre Lagarde dans son admirable ouvrage Max Jacob Mystique et martyr (La Baudinière, 1944), se rapprochent du courant quiétiste. Il assume dès lors sa vie de pêcheur comme condition de sa rédemption. Ses origines juives lui valent, six mois avant la libération de Paris, d être arrêté par la Gestapo, destin qu il accepte comme un martyr. Il est interné par la gendarmerie française au camp de Drancy et y meurt cinq jours plus tard, quelques heures avant sa déportation programmée pour Auschwitz. Jakob Klatzkin Klaczkin (Jakob Klatzkin, Yakov/Jakub Klaczkin) (October 3, 1882 Byaroza-Kartuskaya, Belarus (then Russian Empire) - March 26, 1948 Vevey, Switzerland) was a Jewish philosopher, publicist, author, and publisher. Klatzkin was born to the local Rabbi Eliyahu Klatzkin. He received his early schooling from his father and yeshivas in Lithuania. Later he traveled to Germany to study with philosopher Hermann Cohen. Klatzkin received his doctorate from the University of Berne in Switzerland, then returned to Germany to write for Hebrew periodicals and establish Jewish publishing firms. He also served as director of the Jewish National Fund in Cologne. He wrote widely on the Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza and together with Nahum Goldmann he compiled 10 of 15 anticipated volumes of the German Encyclopaedia Judaica. Klatzkin had a close relationship with Arnold Schoenberg, a Jewish musician who was also active in advancing the need to establish a place of refuge for the Jews in the 1930s. After the Nazis' rise to power in 1933, Klatzkin fled to Switzerland and earned a living giving lectures on various Jewish subjects. He moved to the United States in 1941 and continued to teach in Chicago at the College of Jewish Studies. He returned to Switzerland in 1947 and died there at the age of 66. He rejected the notion of chosenness for the Jewish people, either religious or secular. He argued that the only meaningful goal for Zionism was regaining the land of Israel and normalizing the conditions of Jewish existence. He believed that assimilationists were "traitors to their Judaism". He criticized Ahad Ha-Am for the notion that morality was the key to Israel's uniqueness. He maintained that the spiritual definition of Judaism denied freedom of thought and led to national chauvinism. Klatzkin proposed a Jewish covenant that is based on secular-nationalist terms, a Jewish state based on territorial Zionism that is a normal, national state and culture. Klatzkin also developed an alternative to the Freudian view of life, which holds that it can only be understood from within. This involved his theory of the mind, which emphasizes the so-called rift between life and the spirit or the living or the original, unmediated soul and the spirit. The conflict, according to Klatzkin, is the reason why man lives in constant alienation from the world.
