Commiphora myrrh: a phytochemical and pharmacological updateMedicinal plants have a long track record of use in history, and one of them is Commiphora myrrh which is commonly found in the southern part of Arabia, the northeastern part of Africa, in Somalia, and Kenya. Relevant literatures were accessed via Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to give updated information on the phytochemical constituents and pharmacological action of Commiphora myrrh. It has been used traditionally for treating wounds, mouth ulcers, aches, fractures, stomach disorders, microbial infections, and inflammatory diseases. It is used as an antiseptic, astringent, anthelmintic, carminative, emmenagogue, and as an expectorant. Phytochemical studies have shown that it contains terpenoids (monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, and volatile/essential oil), diterpenoids, triterpenoids, and steroids. Its essential oil has applications in cosmetics, aromatherapy, and perfumery. Research has shown that it exerts various biological activities such as anti-inflammat...

From generation to generation in all countries all around the world medicinal plants play an important role in our live from ancient time till these days of wide drugs and pharmacological high technique industries , the studding of biological and pharmacological activities of plant essential oils attracted the attention to the potential use of these natural products from chemical and pharmacological investigation to their therapeutic aspects. In this paper two resins commiphora Africana and commiphora myrrha were selected to discuss their essential oils for chemical analysis and biological aspect the results of GCMS shows that the two resins are rich in sesqiuterpenes and sesqiuterpene lactones compounds that possess anti-inflammatory and antitumor activity Antibacterial and antifungal bioassay shows antibacterial and antifungal activity higher in the myrrha oil than the Africana oil while antiviral bioassay shows higher antiviral activity in the Africana oil than myrrha oil
Medicinal plants are the richest bioresources of drugs. There is need to validate medicinal and aromatic plants researches results through an organized database. Objective: To identify the terpenoids in Commiphora africana resin and some biological activity specially antiviral activity. Materials and Methods: Two different methods were done to identify Terpenoids in this resin, dipping the resin in CH 2 Cl 2 and isolation using column chromatography [1], ethanol and water extract were extracted for phytochemical screening and the biological aspects. Results: Phytochemical screening identified that Flavonoids, Saponins, Alkaloids and Terpenes were the major constituents of C. africana resin ethanolic and water extracts. GC-MS analysis of CH 2 Cl 2 extract and the isolated samples by column chromatography revealed compounds which Original Research Article Ahmed et al.; EJMP, 13(3): 1-11, 2016; Article no.EJMP.22531 2 can play important role in therapy, so as Betulin C 30 H 50 O 2. Urs-12-en-28-al, 3-(acetyloxy) C 32 H 50 O 3. Cholest-22-ene-21-ol, 3-5-dehydro-6-methoxy-, pivalate C 33 H 54 O 3 and Phthalic acid, bis(2-pentyl) ester C 18 H 26 O 4. LC50 values of water and ethanolic extracts were found to be 100 and 630.9 respectively. While the LC50 for the aqueous water solution of the crude resin was found to be 63.1. High and clear antiviral activity towards Newcastle virus was observed at 400 ug/ml C. africana water solution, 400 ug/ml C. africana water extract and 100, 200, 400, 500 ug/ml C. africana ethanol extract. The highest antimicrobial activity recorded was obtained for C. africana ethanol extract against Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella porwonia, Asperogillus niger and Candida Albicans. Conclusion: Antiviral activity shown by Commiphora africana resin extracts may be due to different compounds included.

Commiphora holtziana gum resins were extracted by steam distillation to separate essential oil. The residue was successively extracted with methanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane and finally with hexane. A combination of chromatographic separation techniques on hexane extract of the Wajir sample of Commiphora holtziana led to the isolation and characterization of a new compound, 1 l-hydroxy-y-muurolene (39). In addition, two known compounds, (1 E)-2methoxy-8,12-epoxygermacra-l(10),7,l l-triene-6-one (7) and (lE)-3-methoxy-8,12epoxygermacra-1,7(8), 10(15), 1 l-tetraen-6-one (8) were also characterized. A total of 14 compounds were identified by the comparison of the mass spectra with data available in the GC MS library. In the antimicrobial assay, the crude extract from Wajir showed an appreciable activity against three Gram positive bacteria tested namely, Bacillus pumilis, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. Activity was also noted in the crude dichloromethane e...

Studies on the Constituents of Commiphora mukul2005 •
Studies on ommiphora mukul (Hook, ex stock) Engl. have led to the isolation of a new lignan (+)-commiphorin (1), a new fatty acid ester, (+)-commiphotetrol (2) along with (-)- hydroxyisohopane (3) [1], which is the first report of this compound from Commiphora mukul of Pakistan origin, Z and E-guggulsterones, cholesterol and guggulsterol-II (4). Of these complete 1H and 13C NMR data of guggulsterol-II (4) is assigned for the first time [2]. The structures of the compounds were elucidated with the help of extensive spectroscopic studies [3, 4]. Compound 1 have shown antibacterial activity against a number of bacteria. Amoxicillin (H2O)3, Ampicilin and Cefuroxime were used as positive control (Table 2).
