ABZU was a very important term in Sumerian mythology although it was restored wrongly and mistranslated. Based on the Sumerian Orthographic Triangle (SORT), the word – Abzu should have been restored as a VCV word rather than a VCCV word, which in reality does not exist in Sumerian. The exact meaning of abzu cannot be derived from the Ab, Zu fragments, which had become a standard practice. Even if we are to do this, we have to know that there was no Sumerian word written as Ab. The Zu fragment although in order, cannot be joined to Ab semantically to create any meaningful word in Sumerian. Although Abzu was often interpreted as the following: A) Enki's shrine B) Temple in Eridu C) Subterranean water D) Mythical place E) Gnosis F) Site of civilization; it did not denote any of them. This article was written to enable the reader decode what this word actually meant.

Review of: The Sumerian dictionary, A, Part III2004 •
The Ugaritic epic poem Baˁlu includes in its third tablet a scene in which the goddess ˁAnatu lists for Baˁlu’s envoys her various conquests (RS 2.[014+ iii 38' 46' [= KTU1–3 1.3]). Among these are several entities of unclear identification, including an {ˁgl . ỉl . ˁtk} ˁiglu ˀIli ˁTK, “the calf of ˀIlu, ˁTK.” The name of this {ˁtk} has only rarely been discussed, and most scholars prefer to transliterate this and the other mysterious monster epithets in this passage. The present contribution compares the appellation {ˁtk} to other occurrences of the Ugaritic root √ˁtk “bind” and to images of enemies in Sumerian literature as “bound bulls” to arrive at the suggestion that {ˁgl . ỉl . ˁtk} should be analyzed as ˁiglu ˀIli ˁatūku (G passive participle), “the calf of ˀIlu, the Bound One” The productivity of comparison across linguistic and geographical borders complicates those models of combat myth transmission that have assumed distinct “Levantine” and “Mesopotamian” mythological spheres. It is argued that the present comparison is further evidence that patterns of influence and intersection are more complex than is generally admitted and that text-derived models for the reconstruction of mythological traditions have not adequately accounted for the variety of processes involved in composition, communication, and reception

173. 668-626, Sumerian Mythology .pdfAlthough pictographic writing was developed in the Climactic Phase of Old Europe between 5300-4300 BCE and equaled a script of its own kind (COG: 319), another or later form of writing was invented in Sumer, or southern Iraq, in the 4th mil. with the earliest literary documents c. 3100 BCE. (POTW: 22.) In addition to these documents, the Enuma Elish (When on High) was the first completed Sumerian text of mythology found in the Nineveh library, c. 668-626 BCE, providing “the earliest evidence of the complete inversion of the mythology of the earlier era.” (MG: 275.)
