EUGÈNE ATGET. Rue de la Montagne-Sainte-Geneviève

Rue de la Montagne-Sainte-Geneviève. Artist: Eugène Atget (French, Libourne 1857-1927 Paris). Dimensions: Image: 17.4 x 22.1 cm (6 7/8 x 8 11/16 in.)
Sheet: 17.7 × 22.5 cm (17.7 × 22.5 cm). Date: 1924.
In his early work, Atget often photographed in full midday sun so that his "documents" would record all the details of architectural or ornamental subjects. In his late work, such as this view of the Pantheon, he often photographed in the early morning, when the absence of people and the presence of a softly luminous light suffused his scenes with quietude. The photograph is clearly an evocation of the experience of Paris, not simply a document of its architecture.
