Description:

(1900 - 1945) Hitler's Chief of the Gestapo placed in charge of security and responsible for the construction and operation of extermination camps. He chose suicide rather than face a hangman's noose at Nuremberg. Excellent association A.L.S. on early NSDAP letterhead, 3pp. 9 x 7.5 in., Gotha, Jan. 11, 1927, a historic letter on early Nazi Party affairs to then-Reich Secretary of the NSDAP and future mass murderer PHILIP BOUHLER. In part: '...Have the enrollment form copied for me by Mrs. Dr. Scheubner [Mathilde von Scheubner, responsible for setting up a press archive for the NSDAP, her husband, Max Erwin von Scheubner-Richter was killed during the Beer Hall Putsch]...Please give the enclosed letter to his Excellency...you will receive 500 index cards from Landshut. Please have all members in the Upper Palatinate transcribed on those cards by the time I return...I also ask that a list of all local group addresses of the Upper Palatinate be prepared for me by the time I return...Communicate to Mr. Schwarz [FRANZ XAVER SCHWARZ, Treasurer of the Nazi Party] that the 3,000 copies of Hitler's speech were sold in Frankfurt-upon-Main to Henriette for 10 marks...I will positively come to the office on Monday, January 13, in the afternoon and need Ms. Erndt for two hours.' Himmler signs in full at the conclusion. Light folds, file holes, else fine. By this time, Himmler was travelling all over Bavaria agitating for the party, giving speeches and distributing literature. Placed in charge of the party office in Lower Bavaria from late 1924, Himmler was then responsible for integrating the area's membership under Hitler when the party was re-founded after the Beer Hall Putsch. PHILIPP BOUHLER (1889-1945) joined the Nazi Party in 1922 with membership number 12, and had become deputy manager of the NSDAP months later. After the subsequent re-founding of the party in 1925 after the failed Beer Hall Putsch, he became Reich Secretary of the NSDAP. Promoted to Reichleiter in 1933, Bouhler was also the first Chief of the Chancellery of the Fuhrer of the NSDAP, during which he prepared secret decrees and managed party affairs before they were brought to Hitler, and his office was responsible for all of Hitler's correspondence. By order of Hitler, Bouhler also helped develop and supervised the implementation of the Nazis' early euthanasia program, Aktion T4, in which mentally ill and physically disabled people were killed.
