Actress and activist Shailene Woodley's beauty advice has been a bit out there at times—like letting your lady bits air out in the sun and taking beauty tips from taxi drivers (more on both comments in a second)—but according to a recent interview with her makeup artist, man, is it really paying off.

Woodley returns to the screen alongside Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Zoe Kravitz in HBO’s Big Little Lies. She plays an outsider, Jane, joining a pack of perfect Monterey, California, tiger moms, in which her grungy #nomakeup look stands out in a sea of glossy strands and flawless complexions. "My job for the character was actually to make her look not good. I had to enhance her tiredness, sadness, and anger,” Claudia Humburg, Woodley’s on-set makeup artist, said in an interview with WWD. "It's the opposite of Nicole and Reese because, in the movie, they are pretty and put together. Jane really stands apart from them. Also, Shailene is a very healthy, happy person who exercises every day. She came into the makeup trailer looking very fresh and good-looking. When she left the makeup trailer, she looked more pale, sad, and darker under the eyes. That was very exciting, actually."

Yes, that’s right. Woodley’s au naturel skin was too fresh for her role in Big Little Lies. Along with sparking our jealousy, that fact also sparked our curiosity about her regular regimen. Below, we revisit the tenets of spectacular skin care Woodley has touted over the years.

Tooth tricks…

In a 2014 interview with Into the Gloss, Woodley talked about her love of oil pulling and making her own toothpaste out of … clay? “I first heard about the benefits of eating clay from a taxi driver. He was African and was saying that where he’s from, the women eat clay when they’re pregnant. Seriously—ask your taxi drivers where they are from and about their customs. You will learn a lot,” she said. If you're curious, Woodley sources her clay from Mountain Rose Herbs.

Vagina medicine…

As we mentioned above, Woodley famously said in that same interview that her beauty routine involves delivering a dose of vitamin D to her vagina. "I was reading an article written by an herbalist I studied about yeast infections and other genital issues,” she told Into the Gloss. “She said there’s nothing better than vitamin D. If you’re feeling depleted, go in the sun for an hour and see how much energy you get. Or, if you live in a place that has heavy winters, when the sun finally comes out, spread your legs and get some sunshine.”

Skin secrets…

If clay and vagina tans are too out there for you, the skin secrets that made Woodley’s skin too glowy and fresh for her latest role are a little easier to get on board with. Naturally, Woodley’s beauty routine is totally green. When she’s not going for the #nomakeup look, she uses products from 100% Pure, a Silicon Valley-based brand that ditches all artificial colors, fragrances, and chemical preservatives, she told ITG. "They have every single makeup product that you could want," she said. "Everything is amazing except the mascara, which doesn’t really work."

We’re not sure clay or sunning your vajay will do much for your complexion, but going a little greener in the name of flawless skin is something we can totally get behind.
