Henning Mankell became a worldwide phenomenon with his crime writing, gripping thrillers and atmospheric novels set in Africa. His prize-winning and critically acclaimed Inspector Wallander Mysteries have featured in bestseller lists all over the globe for many years. His books have been translated into over forty languages and made into numerous international film and television adaptations: most recently the BAFTA-award-winning BBC television series Wallander, starring Kenneth Branagh. Mankell devoted much of his free time to working with Aids charities in Africa, where he was also director of the Teatro Avenida in Maputo.

In 2008, the University of St Andrews conferred Henning Mankell with an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters in recognition of his major contribution to literature and to the practical exercise of conscience.

Henning Mankell was born in Stockholm in 1948. Following his diagnosis in 2014, Mankell wrote a number of articles on his battle with cancer until his death in October 2015

Ich freute mich sehr auf dieses Buch, da ich bisher nur Krimis von Mankell gelesen hatte und mich nun ein "Afrika Buch" eines Kenners der Region erwarten würde. Es ist die Geschichte von Nelio, dessen Dorf von revolutionären Banden niedergebrannt wurde, der flüchten kann und sich nach einer langen Reise in einer afrikanischen Großstadt wiederfindet und dort als Straßenjunge lebt. Man betrachtet die große, komplexe und undurchsichte Großstadt durch den Blick eines Jungen, der jeden Tag damit kämpft zu überleben. Der Junge, Nelio steht wohl exemplarisch für tausende Straßenjungen in Afrika, gefangen zwischen ihren Bedürfnissen und Möglichkeiten, im täglichen Überlebenskampf der sumpfigen Städte. Der Roman rutscht immer mehr ins philosopische und mythologische.Nelio liegt im Sterben auf dem Dach eines Theaters und lässt sein Leben Revue passieren. Der Roman gibt die Kraft Afrika durch einen anderen Blickwinkel zu sehen und regt zum Nachdenken und Philosophieren ein. "Man kann fliegen, ohne sichtbare Flügel zu haben"- Was kann man mehr von einem Roman erwarten!

Man kann den Steppenwolf, Demian,ua.,von H.Hesse,Die Physiker,ua.,von Dürrenmatt,den Alchimisten,etc. von Coelho;Oliver Twist-Der Mann und das Meer ,UVA,nicht mit diesem Buch vergleichen,aber dieses Buch gehört für mich zu ebenbürtiger Literatur.Von wem ist ``der Karren`` eigentlich?Auch so ein Buch,das man anfängt und nach 2 Seiten schnell,am besten an einem Tag durchlesen will.Mir ist es jedenfalls so ergangen.Und wenn diese Bücher durch sind,muß man Sie auf jeden Fall nochmal lesen.
H.Mankell hat sich durch seine Vielseitigkeit, wie Er auch viele Seiten schreibt,und dazwischen erst,ganz oben festgesetzt,als Schriftsteller(Krimi-Doku-Afrika,uva.),wie auch als Mensch.-Erinnerungsbücher,Theater in Maputo,Diverse Projekte,von denen man nicht so viel mitbekommt,wie von Wallander.
Man fragt sich ,wie man den Steppenwolf mit dem Chronisten d.Winde in einem Satz nennen kann?Es gehört vielleicht Etwas dazu;vielleicht ist es das Rascheln der Palmen,das man hier* nicht hat.
