The mini screen doesn't work when it's plugged in to a monitor, you have to use that monitor.
It cant be left off and stay attached to your monitor or it won't relay the HDMI signal to the monitor. And if on it annoyingly shows it' screen icons or a big 'No SD card, or ,No file message' on your monitor and messages won't disappear.
The mini monitor doesn't have the option of turning off the mini screen while using it unattached to another monitor). Which wastes the monitor while recording.
Tv out doesn't work, menu drop box won't even open even when attached to a tv.
No auto off. And thing heats up if you forget to turn it off.
It splits large videos into seperare files, that's normal, so keep your own track of time so you can split things as you like it. Or do it later with an app.
It only does .Mov which I knew ahead of tiTV.
The cables are short, which is normal, so make sure you have a few long hdmis and long USB cords unless you want it hanging off your tv.
One time it wouldn't format its SD card (comes with 59.5 gig which is nice) and jammed. Only resolution was to get an SD adapter and format it at a pc. It also did same when I put in an SD card with other files on it. It spazzed until I had to reformat the SD card independently on pc.
If plugged in USB mode (msdc to transfer files), you can't also record or do anything. And it freezes.
I was going to return in but it is good at straight saving things and that's what I need. 1080 is fine.
I did not try the av cables, only hdmi. But seems like they'd work fine.
Came on time. Solid unit. Screen is nice to have. Good price but wish it wasn't a freeze festival. Use it for simple recording of things, don't think it's going to be some miracle device.
Pros: The large screen is great. Very clear allowing me to see small items on the screen considering its squished down version of my large screens. Using SD or USB sticks means I can cheaply rotate a series of storage items to keep the video until I can get to editing. The case is well made and nice quality. The inputs/outputs cover all the options I could need.. As long as I can get things converted into an hdmi form, I can record it. Setup menu is easy to navigate and affords me the necessary options.
Cons: Here is where this unit makes recording a struggle. First major issue for me is the recorded file size. Using MOV format is fine,, however the files are HUGE!! It doesn't take long for it to reach the file limit of 4GB. The unit will keep recording by closing and opening a new file so only a blip of video is lost. Compared to other MOV videos of similar resolution and duration, these come out over 4X the size. An hour of video seems to be in the range of 6GB at 720 resolution. So, I have to next take the video clips into an editor, merge them togethher, then export to MP4. This is still a large file size for MP4, so to get a reasonable size, I take that clip through Handbrake to again export to MP4 where the file is reduced by about 40%. The hour video will then be around 1.5GB or so. All this doesn't appear to degrade the video or audio that I can tell. Naturally, I'm not creating broadcast quality videos, but who would be if they are trying to use this device.
Second major annoyance is a repeat of what other reviewers have stated. That is the random lockups of the unit. I must constantly check the screen to ensure it is still recording. At times, it could record for more than a couple hours. Other times, it may freeze after a few minutes. I see no pattern. When it hangs up, you can do NOTHING with it. You must hit the hidden reset button and restart. The danger of that is that the unit left the video files open and that means they won't exist when you look at your storage media. Prior 4GB files of finished videos will be OK.
Overall, the unit has good usefulness. I'll keep it and live with the shortfalls. Certainly, if the manufacturer of the unit ever resolves these issues, my unit won't benefit because there is no way to reinstall its firmware.
Overall, works well to create a digital video recording from almost any source. Hopefully they can fix the 4-second loss on long recordings through an update of some kind.
