Here in the States, during the mid-Sixties, the BBC's DOCTOR WHO television series had not yet become a staple of UHF and PBS channels, nor had the numerous books and merchandise connected with the character arrived on these shores. Even if you were not among the lucky ones to have seen the Peter Cushing Doctor Who/Dalek films at a local theater or drive-in, by the late Sixties and early Seventies they frequently turned up on weekend broadcasts, usually showing on Saturday nights or Sunday afternoons. Little did we realize in those pre-Internet days the legacy these two films represented.
John Walsh shines the spotlight on the early days of Doctor Who, and how Amicus (a British-based company best-known for its horror films) reinvented the television property for the big screen and sent the good Doctor out around the world. In addition to a look behind-the-scenes on both motion pictures, we are treated to interviews with surviving cast and crew, as well as an extensive set of stills showing us what went on before and behind the cameras. And, for the collector in all of us, information and images of vintage Doctor Who and Dalek toys abound, making us wish we might wake up and find a few Who goodies under the tree come Christmas.
This book is a must-purchase. Whether you are a fan of Doctor Who or just cinema, John Walsh has done a magnificent job capturing the excitement and enthusiasm of 1960s Doctor Who.

I've enjoyed all of John's books as they cover movies that I am interested in. I find them very approachable to any level of fandom. The content is easily digestible, and the text is reinforced by a large number of photos that greatly compliment the topics being covered.
John is a big Doctor Who fan and I had the opportunity to interview him right before Christmas. He has been granted access to all the living cast members and all the photos and documentation for both Dalek films. Expect to see some never before published pictures in the book as well as many stories. You can also see all the movie posters, some that never made it to release.
As far as availability, John shared that this book is sold out in the UK, so if you are thinking about getting it, I would order now. The book will be reprinted; however, it will take a little time once all available copies are sold.

I ordered this book after seeing the video on you tube and i was not disappointed as it speaks of quality both in the front cover with two iconic scens from each of the films as well as it's raised lettering saying Dr Who & The Daleks,The Official Story of The Films and John Walsh's name.
So much hard work and effort must have gone in to deciding what the content layout should be,the design of the cover, the photographs, interviews and background content.
As soon as you open it you are pesented with a line drawing showing the diimensions of the Daleks and then an excellent intro by Roberta Tovey who played Susan Dr Who's Granddaughter in both films.
I love all the behind the scene photographs showing each of the actors and actresses in black and white as well as superb colour one's as well as those evil Daleks who had to be the best enemies.
I love the story about Terry Nation who brought the Daleks to the screen and without him we wouldn't have hated those mechanical minds so much and been so scared as small children.
I know that i was and had to hide behind the settee each time the Daleks came on the screen.
I really love all the stories about the cast from both series and there are plenty of on set as well as behind the scenes photographs of them to keep you dipping in and out of thE book just to look at something.
I was amazed with the information on the many types of merchandise and music which was connected with both films as well as the televisions series and a lot of which is available now which shows how long lasting the appeal has been.
I would recommend this to any fan of Dr Who as a present from themselves or as a gift and it is well worth the money.
Let us hope that John Walsh decides to do a follow up book on the televisions eries as i wouldc ertainly buy this.

As a sixties child, these two, albeit non-canon, films were amazing. I still remember visiting the local cinema to see them on release but being a little confused at first to see the different characterisations up there on the screen. Later on, I became a true admirer of everything Peter Cushing, especially his very special history with Hammer.
This high-quality book is everything you want it to be! It looks and feels great, and the information that John has provided is stunning, especially with new, not seen before, imagery. I can see myself returning to this terrific book time and time again.
Congratulations John on a wonderful publication!
John Walsh tells the story behind these movies in a well-pitched and considered style. Hard-core fans may know the stories, but the book is very accessible to the casual fan. In fact, as someone who does know the subject matter, I was quite surprised by the number of things I didn't previously know.
However, where the book excels is the quality and quantity of photographs. Walsh had access to both the Studio Canal archives and a number of private collectors, and as such, brings together a great number of previously unpublished photos. Many of these have been re-coloured by Clayton Hickman as only monochrome versions of the original colour negatives have survived.
As well as the films themselves, the book looks at the merchandise they generated at the time (and continue to generate), the attempts to do a third film and the aborted, un-aired radio version also staring Peter Cushing.
Overall, an excellent addition to the library of behind the scenes Doctor Who books.
