Paul Julius Möbius (1853-1907) war Neurologe, Psychiater und Wissenschaftspublizist. Der von Freud als "Vater der Psychotherapie" titulierte Autor widmet sich in diesem Werk Formen von Irrungen und Geisteskrankheiten in den Werken Goethes unter wissenschaftlichen Aspekten. Neben der Definition krankhafter Geisteszustände erklärt Möbius die Bedeutung dieser Zustände für die Betroffenen. Einen großen Teil der Untersuchung nimmt die Frage ein, wie Goethes Umgang mit Geisteskranken war, wie er mit ihnen zu Studienzwecken Kontakt aufnahm und wie seine Einstellung gegenüber damaliger Zustände in den "Irrenanstalten" und "Tollhäusern" war. Nebenbei erfährt der Leser viel über den Umgang mit Kranken zu Goethes Zeiten in dem Kapitel "Über das Irrenwesen in Frankfurt a. M. und im Herzogthume Weimar am Ende des 18. und am Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts" Zum Ende untersucht der Autor Goethes Figuren auf ihre pathologischen Eigenschaften und erklärt den Unterschied zwischen dichterischer und wissenschaftlicher Auffassung verschiedener Krankheitsformen. Unter der Lupe des Autors stehen Protagonisten wie Werther, Fraust, Iphigenie, Tasso oder Wilhelm Meister. Vorliegende Ausgabe ist ein originalgetreuer Nachdruck der Ausgabe in Frakturschrift von 1898.
