Small Polyped Stony Corals:

Acropora - common name for all, Staghorn coral:

Pink with yellow tips (white tips under some lighting conditions) Acro, polyps extend a lot under some conditions decreasing the intensity of the pink color (too bad) - moderate to slow growth rate, orig. from Mark C., IL - pic
Pink with blueish tips (under MH), continues to grow well and tips turn blue with green farther down the branch for a phenomenal color under VHO, orig. from FFExpress, Palau farm-raised, moderate growth rate - under MH - pic, smaller colony under VHO - pic
Larry Jackson's purple-tipped Acro. - orig. from Inland Aquatics, IN. - very fast growing - hardy - brighter light brings out more purple - pic of main mother colony after movement to lower position in tank, before colony was moved lower in tank (due to it growing to the water surface) the purple color extended much farther down the branches - pic, pic of small colony typical morphology - pic
Purple-tipped Acro. - similar to L. Jax Acro above, but with more open structure and somewhat finer branches - might be same species as L. Jax's - orig. from New England Aquarium - moderate growth rate - pic
Purple-tipped, green-polyped Acro. - slow grower - thinner branched than above Acros - don't know what final morphology will be since still too small, seems to need intense light for decent growth rate, might be Acropora horrida, Veron, pg. 160 - orig. from Mark C., IL. - pic
White-tipped brown very long-branched Acro - A. pulchra? - white tips only under intense light, very fast growth - nice wide open branch structure - orig. from Greg S. in NYC - pic
Blue-tipped, 'hairy'-polyped long-branched Acro, A. abrolhosensis? - very fast growth - wide open branch structure - orig. from Greg S. in NYC.
Blue-tipped, long branched Acro - A. formosa? - moderate growth rate - orig. from Mark C., IL. - sorry the baby blue tips did not show up in this photo - pic
Bright green tissue with green polyps Acro - grows very fast - a slimer - orig. from Inland Aquatics, IN. - have had one occasion with tissue recession with this coral, but generally hardy - shot of a frag - pic
Blue-tipped Acro. - the blue is intense and very nice, under some lighting conditions the color extends down a ways from the tips, moderate growth rate - more of a bushy growth form than above blue-tipped Acros, under some conditions blue color only highlights the outline of every polyp, for a stunning effect - pics of small frag - pic - under less intense light color is still good and growth structure is more open and (IMO) pleasing, may be more susceptible to RTN than other Acros, orig. from Mark C, IL.
Purple-tipped Acro with appressed corallites - slow growing - orig. from Mark C. IL. - pic

Montipora - common name?:

Digitata orange - fast grower - nearly pink under intense lighting - orig. from Flying Fish Express - pics of small colony - pic
Digitata - green - fast grower - very bright under intense lighting - orig. from Greg S., NYC - pic
Digitata - brown - fast grower - orig. from micro frag from Ultimate Reef in NH (closed) - pic
Capricornis? - orange - very fast growth rate - forms beautiful whorled structure - orig. from Mark C. in Chicago, easily burned by other corals (do not let them touch it!) - pic
Capricornis - green - newly acquired - seems to grow fast - bright green under VHO, seems to turn a very pale green under intense MH - much thicker laminar plates than orange morph - orig. from Warren G. -pic
Pocillipora damcornis - common name - bird's nest coral:
- green under intense light - fast grower - has asexually spawned in two tanks - orig. from Inland Aquatics, IN - pic
Stylophora - common name?:
pic
Stylophora - pink with green polyps under VHO, brown under power compact/MH, originally from frag from local hobbist - pic - pic of main colony

Porites:

yellow encrusting form from very shallow high energy wave zone in Hawaii - does well under many conditions - pic
green encrusting form from Hawaii - moderate light

Psammcora contigua:

brown encrusting in low light, branches a bit in strong light, but growth may be slowed by intense light, extremely hardy (even mushrooms have a hard time killing this guy) - see Veron, plate 3, pg. 273
