The Atlantic Blue Tang (Acanthurus coeruleus) is a marine fish that is suited for fish only aquariums and reef aquariums. Known for its vibrant coloration and distinctive body shape the Atlantic Blue is a favorite among many aquarium enthusiasts. Originating from the Western Atlantic Ocean, this species, also referred to as the Blue Surgeonfish. Aquarium Setup: The Atlantic Blue Tang flourishes in aquariums with a minimum size of 75 gallons (small sized fish only) but we recommend keeping this fish in 180 galllon aquariums or larger. Providing enough space for swimming and exploring becuase these fish can eventualy reach a maximum size of about 9 inches. For success, incorporate live rock structures and open areas to mimick their natural reef habitat in an aquarium setting. These fish are almost always on the move. Therefore, good water flow and higher oxygen concentrations along with an efficient filtration system are crucial for maintaining optimal water quality for success with the Atlantic Blue Tang.

Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature ranging from 72-78°F (22-26°C), a pH level between 8.1 and 8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025. Consistent monitoring and adjustments of water parameters contribute to the overall health and well-being of the Atlantic Blue Tang.

Diet: The Atlantic Blue Tang is primarily herbivorous and requires a diet rich in algae. Offer high-quality marine pellets, algae sheets, and a variety of fresh vegetables such as spinach, seaweed, and lettuce. Regular feeding of these nutritious options will help maintain the vibrant colors and overall health of the Blue Tang. Additionally, supplement their diet with occasional servings of frozen mysis shrimp or brine shrimp.

Compatibility: Known for their generally peaceful temperament, Atlantic Blue Tangs can be housed with other non-aggressive tankmates. Suitable companions include peaceful species like wrasses, gobies, and smaller reef-safe fish. However, it's important to avoid housing them with aggressive or territorial tankmates to prevent potential conflicts.

Reef Safety: The Atlantic Blue Tang is considered reef safe, making it an excellent choice for reef aquariums. These fish do not exhibit destructive behavior towards corals or invertebrates and can coexist harmoniously in a reef setting. In fact, their foraging behavior on algae contributes to the overall health of the reef ecosystem.
