Johann Margaretha Gutlich was a Dutch painter, born in Rotterdam , 1920 and died in Sao Paulo , Brazil , 2000.
He studied at the academy of arts and technical sciences in Rotterdam and with the painter Henk Chabot. He exhibited at the Boymans van Beunningen Museum in Rotterdam and the Van Lier Gallery in Amsterdam. He acted in resistance and cultural movements during World War II.
After the war, disillusioned followed as wanderer towards Morocco, from where it returned it joined a caravan of gypsies. He immigrated to Brazil in 1953 at the invitation of the Brazilian delegation present in Amsterdam for the international congress of art history in 1952.
In Brazil he exhibited twice at the Museum of Modern Art, at the Louvre Gallery and at the São Paulo Biennial.
His work can be divided into two major phases: figurative expressionism, from the 1930s to 1969; and abstract expressionism, from 1969 to 2000.
