With higher gasoline prices hammering the sales of big pickups and SUVs, the people at Hummer are thinking smaller.
Hummer will have a small SUV concept--named Hummer HX--at the Detroit auto show in January. Of course, smaller is relative at Hummer. The concept is 1.5 inches wider than the H3, but shorter than the smallest SUV in Hummer's current lineup.
General Motors hasn't committed to putting a vehicle based on the HX into production. But if it does, a prime competitive target would be the Jeep Wrangler. One of the design proposal sketches was labeled "Jeepeater."
Among the Hummer HX's features are removable doors and interchangeable rear roof sections.
Two years ago, when the project started, GM handed the design to a trio of fresh graduates from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit--Robert Jablonski, David Rojas and Min Young Kang, now GM designers.

A Hummer HX design proposal.
Off-roading is a key element of this Hummer HX design proposal.
