From the recipe by Peter Josef Früh of the family brewery, this top-fermented specialty beer features the best ingredients and is brewed according to the German Purity Law. A favourite beer of Cologne, which became one of the city’s original.

Poured from 500ml bottle into shaker pint glass. Looks like a pale lager with a slightly more rich golden hue, high levels of carbonation. Aroma is pepper and berries with a distinctive malt aroma. Taste is light and crisp with a lingering herbal bitterness on the finish, helped by the high carbonation, makes you want to keep guzzling - can therefore see why the Cologne bar culture uses this style for constant refills as you do want to keep drinking it. Not overly complex, average drinker would probably assume this was just a slightly malty, grassy bitter lager rather than an ale cold-brewed to be a hybrid style. Enjoyable without doing anything particularly special.

Currently downing a few glasses on Saturday 11 November, the first day of Carnival here in Köln. As expected, an absolute shit show. Everyone is in a costume except me. Pretty standard light beer, goes down easy. A bit sharper and drier than most beers of this style. €9.20 for four 0.2l pours, not bad in late 2023 during a big festival. Certainly not the best in Köln but does the trick.

330 ml bottle
Served in an oversized, stemless, wine glass
This beer pours a brilliant golden hue and is topped with less than an inch of tan head that leaves spotty lacing.
Light citrus, grain, and grass aromas
It has a fruity and citrus flavor upfront. Grain and grass in the middle. Somewhat of a lemony finish.
This bodied with a watery mouthfeel
Decent beer

L: straw gold with a big white head
S: more to this than the taste. Citrus and kitchen garden herbs with a touch of yeast.
T: grassy and slatey but a bit thin honestly.
F: good carbonation, crisp
O: just not enough complexity or depth for me. To be fair, it's easy drinking and well-made.

A great kolsh selection and what introduced me to German beer. My life has never been the same…and my wallet certainly knows it. The Germans produce some great beer! I maybe a little biased as it was my first but this is my favorite Kolsh.
