What are these cleats?
Postby rodneycc » Thu Jan 30, 2014 10:52 pm
Can someone help identify these. They looks like cleats but might be covers? The part no is shimano sm-sh31. If they are cleats can they be used in place of spd-sl cleats? I doubt it but just asking.

The rear plate of the pedal should slot into the groove visible near the right edge of the lower unit.
Happy to be told I'm wrong tho'...

What are these cleats?

I used these, and earlier, leather cleats - before I bought my first clipless pedals in the early 90's.
The clipless were a godsend after using these, but hideously expensive. And every time I see somebody worrying about using clipless I remember how horrible these were and wonder what all the fuss is about.

You may wish to check with Big Friendly Vegan on this forum if he has a track cyclist who could use them as some of these guys still may use pedals like this.

Really? I never buy Shimano shoes so wouldn't have known. Are they meant to clip on to those test pedals that come with some bikes?Duck! wrote:I reckon Shimano must have a few million of these they're trying to get rid of.... Just about every pair of road shoes comes with these fitted, even though they haven't made pedals to suit them for a long time.

That's one of the reasons us oldies are paying less for bike shoes than we did 20 yrs ago!

Hmmm, I've never gotten cleats supplied with any cycling shoes I've bought. Ever.gabrielle260 wrote:Don't knock the cleats that are on bike shoes when you buy them! Without them bike shoes are categorised as shoes and attract a higher rate of customs duty. With them they are classed as sporting equipment and get a lower rate.
