Parallax freehub body

Hi all,

I have a Shimano Deore LX / "Parallax" rear hub, model FH-M563. How do I tell if it is for 7-speed cassettes or 8/9 speed?

If it is 7-speed, I would think about doing a freehub swap - what 8/9 freehub bodies are compatible? All of the replacements I can find are "7S".

Thanks in advance!

Andy.

A 7-speed freehub body is too narrow to accept an 8+ speed cassette and an 8/9/10-speed freehub body will take a 7-speed cassette but need a 4.5 mm spacer to fill in the extra width. Try fitting an 8 or 9-speed cassette and, if you can get the lockring on it's the correct one.

I remembered I have an old 8-speed hub in my spares box - I compared the freehub bodies and they're the same so I guess I have an 8/9/10-compatible hub!

7-speed freehub body measures about 31mm from the back ledge to the edge (camera distortion makes it look like I don't have the ruler lined up correctly on the left):

Small cog used to screw on, securing the rest, Outside threaded , now lockrings use internal threads

Older ones all the splines were the same width, later they settled on a one thicker and 1 thinner so all the cogs go on in only 1 orientation.

& the 9 spline moved into single speed uses

I own both the 7-speed and 8-speed LX Parallax freehubs. The 7-speed model is FH-M563. The 8-speed model is FH-M565.

So it looks like someone has fitted an 8/9 speed hub body to mine then (I just got it 2nd hand).
