My understanding is that the actuation ratio of all of these rear derailleurs is the same, but the RD-A551 has a longer parallelogram than the RD-A550, in order to reach across an 8-speed cassette...

You are correct!! It just occurred to me that I have complete 105-1056 and rx100-A551 groupsets sitting in my garage. So for the record:
105 RD1056

RX100 RD-A551

25g difference. I still like the shiny finish of the RX100 but I’m starting to understand the subtle differences now.

I'm going to disagree partially with the consensus here. I am a fan of cheap shifters and derailleurs, but they do wear out, probably more quickly than high end stuff. I had a 3x7 RSX drivetrain on my ~1996 Bianchi Volpe. It mostly worked but it shifted inaccurately and slowly. A replacement would have probably improved things, but not because the replacement would have been high end but only because it have been less worn out. The OP does not state how well his things are working, so upgrade-itis may be in play here. Cheap derailleurs work great when new but some pivot points have plastic or soft metal whereas the better stuff is (often) made to last more. That may or may not matter. I like to take my chances with this stuff. I recently built a bike up with Shimano Claris components, on par with RSX or maybe even lower. It works great, but I've only had it for a couple of years or so. We will see how long it lasts.

I like to spend money on hubs and bottom brackets because they get a lot more stress than derailleurs and shifters. I like to spend money on nice tires because they really ride better than crappy tires.
