When you think of Scissor Sisters, the first song that likely comes to mind is “Let’s Have a Kiki.” The popular club track became a defining song for the group, landing them at the top of the Dance Club Songs chart back in 2012 and becoming a frequent staple in gay bars across the country.
But in a recent interview, former Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears revealed that the song’s popularity may have ultimately led to the band’s split in 2012. “I didn’t know what the fuck to say after that song, quite honestly,” he told GayCities. “When that song came out and did what it did … I was just like, ‘Well, there it is, I guess we did it.’”
Fans have speculated for years over what exactly broke the band up, with some theorizing that Shears and fellow lead singer Ana Matronic had a falling out with one another, leading to the demise of the group. But in the interview, Shears vehemently denied those rumors, saying that while “we got into some fights,” the relationships within the band were strong and didn’t ultimately contribute to the group’s hiatus.

Elaborating on “Kiki,” Shears said that after such a long time with the group, and finally seeing one of their songs perform so well, he thought it was a good idea for the band to quit while they were ahead. “I thought, we’ve been recording and touring for 10 years, and I felt like it was time,” he said. “This wasn’t what anybody in the band had planned to do. So I thought it would be fun to end on a high note.”
But the star added that just because the band left didn’t mean that they were gone for good, hinting at the possibility of a reunion in the future. “That’s not to say we’re never going to do anything again,” he said. “The Scissor Sisters will be back.”
