On the opening date of their European tour in Berlin on Sunday (June 3), Axl Rose took on the role of the late Scott Weiland as Guns N’ Roses performed an unexpected cover of Velvet Revolver’s “Slither.” The Contraband track was the first time GN’R had ever publicly played a song by Slash and Duff McKagan’s former band with the late Stone Temple Pilots singer.
The cover comes as a surprise considering Weiland and Rose’s volatile history. The two rockers were embroiled in a public feud in 2006, with Weiland calling Rose a “fat, botox-faced wig-wearin’ f—,” among other things. Slash and Duff rejoined GN’R in 2016, with their Not In This Lifetime… Tour grossing over $480 million dollars to date, making it the fourth highest-grossing tour in history.
Guns N Roses are set to headline the Download Festival next weekend (June 9).
