Morrissey sat down with Larry King on Wednesday for his first in-person interview in nearly a decade and, among many things, discussed his own struggles with depression.

One revelation that came out of it was when Morrissey nonchalantly called suicide “admirable.” Though he said he personally would never kill himself, it is a surprising comment to hear coming from a man with a legion of such seriously sad-faced fans behind him.
When King asked the former Smiths frontman if he’d ever thought of harming himself,” Morrissey replied, “It crosses everybody’s mind. Everybody thinks of it; even people who mistakenly assume that they’re happy. They think of just disappearing and having enough and many people do, just taking control and saying, ‘No more, no more of this silliness.’ And it’s admirable.”

Morrissey described his depression as a “black dog” — a nod to writer Samuel Johnson and Winston Churchill, who used the same phrase to describe their own depression.
“It’s usually the very first thing when you wake up,” he said. “There is no cure and I think that it’s part of being a sensitive, open human.”
