Austrian Identity Card
New ID-card with chip from August 2nd, 2021.
You can apply for an Austrian Identity Card (Personalausweis) which contains fingerprints from August 2nd, 2021, at the Austrian Embassy. This document can be used to travel in many European countries. However, many countries do not recognize the Austrian Identity Card as a valid travel document.
The same regulations apply to the application for the Austrian Identity Card as to the application for the Austrian passport. Accordingly, the same documents are required as for the passport application (here you can find the information regarding passport applications).
IMPORTANT: All currently valid ID cards remain valid until the expiry date printed on the card. There is no need to apply for an identity card with a chip.
Consular fee: € 62,- in cash (minors up to two years: free of charge; minors two to 15 years: € 27,-);
checks and credit cards cannot be accepted.
