Volunteer Spotlight: Mehren Sulaman

Posted on 23 August 2023

This month we have asked Volunteer Mehren Sulaman to contribute to our Volunteer Spotlight series where we are asking volunteers to share their experience with us.

Thank you to our fabulous volunteers for their amazing work!

Hi Mehren! Tell us a little about yourself. How long have you been volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?
I have been volunteering at the gallery for about 2 months now. I studied Law at Manchester University and I have been here ever since!

What made you want to volunteer here?

After studying Law and qualifying as a solicitor, I wanted an outlet to be involved in something more creative. I love art and visiting galleries and believe that they are vital in any community, to educate, inspire and entertain. I wanted to be in an environment where I would be exposed to different mediums of art and passionate people who I could learn from. I was initially drawn to Castlefield Gallery’s current exhibition ‘The Poetics of Water’ which focuses on sustainability and the climate crisis and the opportunity to volunteer here seemed like the perfect fit.

What’s your favourite thing about volunteering at Castlefield Gallery?
One of my favourite things is getting the opportunity to chat to the people who visit the gallery. I enjoy meeting new people and I am a very curious person, so I love interacting with the visitors and hearing about what they think of the exhibition. People from all walks of life visit every day- from aspiring artists, to families and tourists and it is so interesting to hear their stories and motivations for coming to the gallery.

What would you say to someone who’s thinking of volunteering with Castlefield Gallery?
I would tell them to just go for it! My experience has been thoroughly enjoyable thus far and I am learning so much every time I volunteer. The process from the start of applying to volunteer is a positive one- the staff are so welcoming and encouraging and take a genuine interest in you. I would also tell people not to be discouraged if they do not have a background in art. The main thing that I feel is valued here is a passion for art in any capacity and the willingness to learn. It is a great opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone and meet some fantastic people.
