Frank Lampard’s side head into the game off the back of a fine 5-3 victory over RB Salzburg in Austria earlier this week, with Christian Pulisic netting his first Chelsea goals and Pedro scoring a stunning back-heel strike.

That followed earlier victories over Barcelona, Reading and St Patrick’s Athletic, as the Premier League opener away to Manchester United on Sunday 11 August draws closer.

Ahead of today’s clash with Monchengladbach, we run our eye over the German side and pick out the key players to look out for.

Who’s in charge?

Marco Rose

Rose is the new man in charge at Borussia-Park, after arriving from our last pre-season opponents RB Salzburg earlier this summer.

The German achieved huge success in Austria, winning two titles and the Austrian Cup, before moving over to Monchengladbach. Rose enjoyed a long career as a defender in his homeland, with the likes of Leipzig, Hannover and Mainz.

Key player

Oscar Wendt

The Swedish defender has become a key component of Monchengladbach’s backline since arriving in Germany from Copenhagen in 2011.

The left-back has clocked up almost 200 appearances for Monchengladbach, as well as being capped at international level with Sweden, although he retired from international football in 2017 to concentrate on his club career.

Although yet to lift a trophy at Borussia-Park, Wendt won four Danish Superliga titles in his time at Copenhagen.

One to watch

Marcus Thuram

The French striker joined Monchengladbach earlier this summer from Guingamp, and was handed the No.10 shirt which was vacated by former Chelsea man Thorgan Hazard, following his switch to Borussia Dortmund.

Thuram is the son of former France international and Barcelona and Juventus defender Lilian Thuram, who lifted the World Cup in 1998. Thuram junior is an exciting prospect and will be expected to have a big impact in front of goal in the Bundesliga this term.
