What's the Story?
High school senior Valeria (Annie Cabello) is accidentally texted by a boy at the start of ANONYMOUSLY YOURS (ANONIMA). As the two begin an anonymous virtual friendship, she starts falling for classmate Alex (Ralf). Both are feeling pressure from their parents to follow in their footsteps professionally, but they also have their own dreams. As graduation approaches, they and their friend group have to make some decisions about their lives.
Is It Any Good?
This romantic comedy from Mexico packages some timely life lessons for teens and parents in a bright and bubbly exterior. Anonymously Yours relies on the likeability of its cast, particularly star Annie Cabello as Valeria. Cabello delivers a credible and charming performance as a high school senior obsessed with movies but whose parents have other plans for her. A love for cinema comes across in the tale. The filmmaker's use of vivid colors in settings and wardrobes matches the spirited energy of the teen cast, and the message about letting young people pursue their dreams is conveyed in a positive and healthy way.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the idea of meeting someone online, as Vale and Alex initially do in Anonymously Yours. Are there downsides to this? Vale and her friends seem concerned for her safety at a couple of moments. Why?
The film is set in Mexico. How does life for teens here seem similar to or different from elsewhere, in your experience?
The teens here drink a lot at parties and bars. Does their consumption seem problematic? Why or why not?
