About the KLH Model Three

Ned O.

Iconic looks and hi-fi sound

Henry Kloss and KLH introduced their original Model Five back in 1968, and it became a popular and broadly recognizable speaker that helped propel the company's success. The Model Three — like the new version of the Model Five — takes advantage of modern driver technology, but houses it in a retro-styled, acoustic suspension (sealed) cabinet that harks back to the company's hi-fi roots. And here's a cool touch, also from the original 1968 version of the Model Five — a passive sound-shaping switch that lets you tailor the speaker's output to your room's acoustics.

KLH Model 3 Stand-mount speaker

KLH's Model Three vintage-styled hi-fi speakers have elegant sound and design (shown in English walnut with included stand).

And here's a cool touch, also from the original 1968 version of the Model Five — a passive sound-shaping switch that lets you tailor the speaker's output to your room's acoustics.

The Three's smaller two-way design means it can fit in spaces where the Model Five could be overwhelming. KLH says you can place these stand-mount speakers closer to the wall than their big brothers.

An elegant speaker with included stand

The KLH Model Three has an elegant and careful design — inside and out. Its 8" woofer is supported internally by a die-cast aluminum frame, and the 1" tweeter features a machined aluminum faceplate. The crossovers use high-quality capacitors and inductors to ensure that the drivers work together seamlessly for accurate sound. The sturdy cabinet is constructed of 3/4"-thick MDF with an elegant, genuine wood veneer finish in either mahogany or walnut.

A magnetically attached linen grille is included, as is a custom steel riser with a gentle 8-degree upward tilt. That makes it easy to angle them toward the sweet spot.

The KLH name lives on

Henry Kloss and his partners founded KLH in Cambridge, Massachusetts back in the '50s. Kloss changed the audio industry with innovations like the acoustic suspension loudspeaker, the first-ever full-range electrostatic speaker, and the first high-selectivity table radio.

Today, KLH is headquartered in Noblesville, Indiana. The company's new speaker lineup represents a fresh take on that rich and varied KLH legacy.

Features

KLH Model Three: Second in line in the Model Collection, the Model Three stand-mounted bookshelf speaker continues the KLH acoustic suspension legacy of accurate audiophile-quality performance. This traditional-style bookshelf speaker serves as the perfect solution for music enthusiasts with smaller listening spaces. The KLH Model Three also offers placement flexibility, allowing closer positioning to the wall than the average loudspeaker. The Model Three can even fit on a large bookshelf or bookcase.

2-Way Driver Design: The KLH Model Three utilizes a 2-way driver design with a 1" aluminum dome tweeter and 8" pulp/paper cone woofer for full-range sound in average-sized listening spaces. The 1" aluminum dome tweeter provides a smooth extended response with low distortion and dispersion characteristics that are polished and natural, which is crucial for a large and accurate stereo image. The 8" pulp/paper cone woofer offers smooth and extremely accurate response up to 1600Hz, for clear vocals and rich reproduction of lower midrange instruments- all while minimizing distortion.

  • 1" Tweeter: The 1" aluminum dome tweeter features a soft rubber suspension and a machines aluminum faceplate.
  • 8" Woofer: The 8" pulp/paper cone woofer features a reverse roll rubber suspension, 1.5" diameter flat-wire voice coil, and a non-resonant die-cast aluminum frame.

Advanced Crossover Network: The KLH Model Three's thirteen component network uses high quality iron-core inductors & Mylar capacitors.

3-Position Acoustic Balance Control: A 3-Position Acoustic Balance Control helps to tailor the loudspeaker's output for the most difficult acoustic environments. The selector switch is located on the back of each loudspeaker and provides the ability to tailor the output above 400Hz.

  • HI Position: This is the default position, or 0dB. Its is the preferred selection for neutral to dead listening spaces.
  • MID Position: This adjusts the loudspeaker -1.5dB above 400Hz. Use this setting for slightly live listening spaces.
  • LO Position: This adjusts the loudspeaker -3.0dB above 400Hz. Use this setting for very live listening spaces (for example, a room with a tile floor).

Acoustic Suspension MDF Enclosure: The KLH Model Three incorporates an acoustic suspension (sealed) enclosure for accurate and linear sound reproduction. The enclosure is made from structurally reinforced 3/4" MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard). In an acoustic suspension design, the volume of air inside the enclosure serves as a cushion of air, or air spring, to provide a restoring force for the woofer cone. The air inside the enclosure essentially becomes the dominant part of the woofer's suspension. Since the volume of air inside the enclosure is more linear than the mechanical parts of the woofer's suspension, this enables the woofer's diaphragm to move in a more linear fashion. This also enables the driver to operate at higher excursions with less distortion than more traditional bass-reflex or ported type systems.

Low-Profile Magnet Attached Grille: The included low-profile, acoustic cloth grille magnetically attaches to the front of the speaker cabinet with no visible fasteners for a flawless appearance.

8 Degree Slant Riser: The KLH Model Three stands on an 8-degree slant riser base made from powder-coated 14-gauge steel. The riser base's upward angular stance ensures the sound is directed accurately toward the listener, while the steel reinforces its notoriety as a solid and non-resonant speaker base.

  • Dimensions Of Speaker With Riser Base: 12.25" (w) x 28.25 (h) x 11.5" (d); 36 lbs
  • Dimensions Of Speaker Only: 12.25" (w) x 19.0", (h) x 10.5" (d); 29 lbs

Gold-Plated Binding Posts: The KLH Model Three is outfitted with gold-plated, binding posts terminals that will accept bare wire (up 12AWG), pin-connectors, spade-lugs, and banana plugs (single only). The gold-plate binding post terminals provide excellent signal transfer and resist corrosion.

Placement Options: Room acoustics can play a major role in the sound reproduction characteristics of the Model Three loudspeaker. Experimenting with loudspeaker placement is an important step for optimum acoustic performance and ensuring the customer gets exactly what they pay for. Fortunately, the Model Three is very placement friendly, and only a couple of factors need to be kept in mind.

  • Low frequencies (below 400Hz) are heavily influenced by the loudspeakers position relative to the boundaries of the room. Mid & High frequencies (above 400Hz) are mostly influenced by the reflectivity of the listening room boundaries and the type of furnishings.
  • The KLH Model Three loudspeaker is tuned for 6" to 24" off the back wall and at least 24" from the corner of the listening room. For an otherwise neutral listening room, this should be considered the best starting position when first setting up the loudspeakers.

Note: The Model Three exhibits a broad horizontal sound dispersion pattern. The sonic signature remains essentially the same over a +/- 20 degrees angle off the horizontal axis of the loudspeakers. As a result, the loudspeakers can be toed in or out about 20 degrees without any significant change in the direct sound from the loudspeaker arriving at the listening position. However, as the loudspeaker toe-in is adjusted, it does affect the sound energy reflected off the side wall of the listening room which directly effects the soundstage and ambiance.

Break-In Period: The KLH Model Three loudspeaker will sound great right out-of-the-box. But since a new speaker include many moving parts, these parts need time to adjust to one another and therefore some amount of "break-in" is required. In order for the loudspeaker to sound its best, KLH recommends the speaker to be played at a moderate volume for at least 8 hours prior to any critical listening.

Customer Q&A

2 questions already asked

Q
These speakers appear to be rated at 6 ohms. Dumb question: Are they compatible with an integrated amp rated at 80 watts x 2 channels into 8 ohms (or 4 ohms)?
bart  Dec 07, 2022
1 answer
A
If your amp is stable down to 4 ohms any speaker 4 ohms and up will work with the amplifier. If your amp is only stable at 8 ohms, anything lower than 8 ohms would overheat the amp. Based on what you're saying, it sounds like your amp is stable at 4 ohms and if that is correct these speakers will be compatible.

Q
Are these speakers good for all types of classical music, solo, chamber music and orchestral music? Thanks

A
I have these set up on a Sony STR-DH550 in a small to medium size room. They are being used for tv / movies / music and so far have been excellent all around speakers. It's very hard to fault these as they sound excellent, are highly accurate, compact, and a very good deal at this price point. If I have to be critical I will say the mids are a bit flat and this is especially noticeable if you attenuate the highs using the three position selector. Also, they do benefit from some low frequency support. I found my definitive tech. 8" sub fills in nicely. If you are looking for all rounders for a good price in a small vintage looking package, these are very hard to beat. If you want the best possible clarity for any price you can find better.
