Suspicious item at Lewes Lowe's deemed nonexplosive

Delaware State Police's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit was on the scene at Lowe's near Lewes to examine a suspicious item Monday, Dec. 28.

The suspicious item at a Lewes Lowe's has been examined and deemed nonexplosive.

An investigation at the store, located at 20364 Plantations Road, began at about noon, according to a press release.

Troopers closed all entrances to the business after the report of a suspicious item in a shopping cart. Delaware State Police said customers were held for about an hour before it was deemed safe for them to leave.

The Delaware State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit also responded to the scene.

The item was removed and determined to be a piece of PVC pipe with two end caps, according to the release. The store has been reopened.

A customer purchased the pipe with the end caps attached earlier that morning along with some other items. When he pushed the shopping cart out to his vehicle, he unloaded the other items out of the cart but didn't get the pipe that was left on the infant seat area of the cart, police said.

No charges will be filed in this incident, police said.
