Main identification features
  • red
  • preopercle: no spine, rear edge scaly
  • rear of pelvics black
PRIACANTHUS

BIGEYES

Body moderately elongate oval, strongly compressed; head profile asymmetrical, with tip of lower jaw above or below body midline; preopercular spine almost absent in adults (of eastern Pacific species); dorsal fin with X spines, increasing in size to rear, last longest but<2X length of 2nd; tail straight (in eastern Pacific species); pelvic fins of moderate length; scales small, 56-115 in lateral series, present on rear of operculum.

A circumtropical genus with 12 species; one species occurs in the tropical eastern Pacific and Hawaii.
