Someone just paid $US145,000 for an old Saab – more than five times its original price

A 1987 Saab 900 Turbo convertible has sold for $US145,000 ($AU210,400) at an online auction in the US – more than five times its price when new, and 10 times more than the hammer price of a similar example purchased last week.

An immaculate low-mileage Saab 900 Turbo convertible has sold for $US145,000 ($AU210,400) – more than five times the car’s price when new in 1987.

Listed on US auction house website Bring a Trailer, the Saab 900 Turbo convertible's odometer has recorded just 246 miles (396km) since it was sold new in March 1987 by a dealer in the US state of Connecticut.

In 1987, the Saab 900 Turbo convertible was priced from $US26,580 ($AU38,550) plus taxes in the US – equivalent to more than $US69,000 ($AU100,000) when adjusted for inflation.

According to the listing, the Saab 900 Turbo remained with its first owner from 1987 until 2021, where it was purchased by a car dealer who later sold it at auction through Bring a Trailer.

This example of the Saab 900 Turbo is powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine which produced 118kW and 255Nm when new.

Drive is sent to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission, rather than the optional three-speed automatic.

Painted in Cherry Red with a tan leather interior, no work has been done to the Saab’s cosmetic appearance since it was new, with the listing claiming its paintwork, upholstery and power-operated soft-top roof are all original.

Heated front seats and a Clarion cassette stereo were fitted as standard in 1987, as were the 15-inch alloy wheels, still wrapped in the original Pirelli P6 tyres – although the listing advises its new owner should consider replacing the 35-year-old rubber.

The seller says a number of the Saab 900 Turbo’s mechanical parts were replaced in 2022 due to old age.

Repairs undertaken earlier this year included a refurbished fuel tank, new fuel pump, engine thermostat, head gasket and fluid flush.

A similar 1988 Saab 900 Turbo convertible with 77,000 miles (134,000km) recorded on its odometer recently sold for $US13,500 on Bring a Trailer – less than 10-times the cost of the low-mileage 1987 example.
