What Candace Cameron Bure Eats in a Day to Be in the Best Shape of Her Life

The actress, producer and author chatted with us about how she stays healthy with a busy schedule.

Whether you grew up watching DJ Tanner on Full House or are a huge fan of Hallmark movies (or both!), you've probably noticed that Candace Cameron Bure keeps getting better with age. Not only is she writing, acting and producing for the Hallmark Channel, she is also a wife and mom of three who has to work hard to make time for some self-care.

"I've loved getting older because you begin to appreciate the body more and more, and I love seeing what it can do at the age I'm at now," Bure says. "I'm in the best shape of my life in my 40s. I'm grateful for my body, which makes me want to continue to care for it well, specifically through the foods I eat, exercising and getting the rest I need."

Bure makes fitness a huge priority in her life, and she tries to work out in the morning so she can fit it into her schedule (and actually enjoy it). Bure says she loves all kinds of activity, and you can find her in the gym mixing up cardio and weights or using her Kira Stokes app to give her a killer workout.

"The secret is doing the type of exercise I actually enjoy so it doesn't feel like a chore," Bure says. "I also love social walks or hikes with a friend." However, when the actress is working 16 hours a day on set in Canada, she doesn't beat herself up for only making it to the gym once a week. Bure says she makes sure to allow her body time to rest, or it won't perform at its best.

When it comes to her diet, Bure and her family follow a pretty simple and nutritious eating regimen centered around whole foods. She doesn't restrict any food groups or macros, but she does limit the amount of highly processed food is in her household. Here's what you'll typically find her powering through the day with:

Breakfast

Bure likes to enjoy a cup of matcha tea when she first wakes up, before hitting the gym four to five times a week. The actress is also very big on hydration—she keeps a 32-ounce water bottle with her throughout the day and tries to refill it at least once. She prefers big, hearty meals over grazing throughout the day and finds intermittent fasting works for her body and schedule, so she tends to hold out until late morning for her first meal.

Lunch

Now's when the fun begins! Bure like to load up at lunch with a bowl full of whole grains, greens and veggies and a lean protein like seafood or chicken. Bure likes to keep Starkist Creations pouches with her to amp up her lunches with some omega-3-rich tuna or salmon for extra staying power. She says she is all about finding ways to make grain bowls colorful and full of different textures to keep things interesting.

If you're looking to lunch like Candace, our Seared Sesame-Tuna Bowls are a great place to start. They're basically a giant deconstructed sushi roll with ahi tuna and a garlicky-ginger soy sauce. Yum.

Snacks

While Bure prefers big meals over snacking, she does like to keep a stash of healthy snacks on hand, especially if she has exercised that day. Some of her favorites include pistachios, fresh fruit, almonds, or veggies and tuna.

Dinner

Bure says her husband, former NHL hockey player Valeri Bure, is the star chef of their house, and she has learned a lot of her cooking skills from him. If he's cooking, they usually follow a formula of some lean protein, whole grains and cooked veggies that their kids enjoy too. Bure says she likes to makes sure she prioritizes having protein, fat and carbs at every meal.

There's nothing like a sheet-pan dinner to get a healthy meal on the table during the week, and it also makes for easy clean up. Our Sheet-Pan Mediterranean Chicken, Brussels Sprouts and Gnocchi can make it onto your plate in 40 minutes and will keep you satisfied for hours.

Favorite Treats

While Bure runs a tight ship when it comes to her added sugar intake, she makes sure she indulges her sweet tooth once or twice a week. This usually comes in the form of ice cream. And while she loves ice cream in all forms, she prefers a funky flavor with lots of different add-ins, like cookie dough.

Like Candace, we'd much rather enjoy a scoop of the real stuff than down a whole pint of the low-calorie kind. Our Blackberry-Ginger Ice Cream Sandwiches are a zesty spin on the classic ice cream truck treat.

The Bottom Line

It's clear Candace takes her health very seriously and does a good job of getting enough veggies, plenty of wholesome carbs and heart-healthy fats. While we hope intermittent fasting works for her lifestyle, it's certainly not for everyone.

While it's fun to see what our favorite stars like to eat and how they take care of themselves, it's important to remember that every body is different and needs to be listened to! Your best body may not look like Candace's or be nourished the same way as hers, but we could all certainly use some more veggies and social walks with a friend in our day.
