Elton John's Best Outfits Over The Years
His incredible outfits enhance his infectious showmanship.
The only thing as memorable as Elton John's incredible contributions to pop music are his absolutely stellar wardrobe choices. From day one, he's put on a killer live show with tricks like rocking out sans-bench and floating on his piano, and his great looks absolutely add to the appeal of his performances. John can rock a clean-cut suit just as well as the most flamboyant and fabulous glittery look. While it is impossible to list them all, here's a look back at some of Elton John's best outfits from his long career.
1972 - Not Enough Patches
This number of iron-on denim patches must be Guinness World Record-worthy, and it looks glorious.
1973 - Sharp Suit Portrait
John is obviously the king of eyewear, and matches his glasses well with his white suit and flowery button-up for this portrait.
1973: Rocket Records Launch Look
John had a great suit on for the day he added "Record Label Founder" to his resume. At its height, Rocket Records housed musicians like Neil Sedaka, Cliff Richard, Kiki Dee, and Colin Blunstone.
1974 - At the Boston Garden
Everything from John's massive bedazzled hat to his frilled sunglasses is over-the-top in the best way possible.
1975 - At the RFK Pro Celebrity Tennis Tournament
This funny ensemble coordinated around a monogrammed sweater shouts out the Australian former tennis player Rod Laver.
1975 - At Dodger Stadium with Bernie Taupin
No, you're not hallucinating, that's a glittering sequined Dodgers jersey which John rocked for this stadium show. Yes, it's incredible. And yes, Harry Styles dressed up as Elton John here for Halloween one year.
1970s: Performing with Kiki Dee at The Troubador
John raised his profile substantially in the U.S. when he began doing shows at The Troubadour in Los Angeles. Here he's performing with the singer Kiki Dee, with a casual but still super-sharp outfit.
1977 - Performing On 'The Muppet Show'
Clearly, John doesn't want to be upstaged, even by beloved puppets, so he brought his all to this performance of "Crocodile Rock" on The Muppet Show.
1978 - Leopard Print in Middlesex
Who could rock this leopard print coat better than Elton John? Probably only Cruella de Vil, and luckily she's fictional.
1980 - At the Rosemont Horizon
John busted out this incredible outfit and hat combo for a show at Illinois' Rosemont Horizon arena, now the Allstate Arena.
1980 - Performing in Central Park
John donned a Daffy Duck costume for this outdoor concert and yes, he's shaking those feathers.
1982 - At Madison Square Garden
Why not go for a blue Troubadour look for a show? John really should have been cast in some version of The Three Musketeers.
1984 - Cowboy Vibe Portrait Shot
John could have starred in a Western film while he was at it too! He definitely pulls off the cowboy hat, and that fox sweater is pretty awesome all by itself.
1986 - Universal Ampitheatre
John wore this phenomenal pink mohawk look at the Universal Amphitheatre, a venue that was in Los Angeles from 1972 to 2013. The space was demolished and it's now part of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Universal Studios attraction.
1989 - At a 'Vanity Fair' Benefit with Paula Abdul
John looks slick in a regular suit when he throws one on, but more often than not you'll see far more accents of color and personality from the singer than a typical suited celeb.
1991 - With Donatella Versace in New York
You're on another level when you've got a coordinated color scheme that matches your baseball cap, suit jacket and turtleneck underneath.
1992 - At a Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in Wembley
John was rocking red at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness at Wembley Stadium.
1994: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
The singer was of course one of the best-dressed inductees when he was brought into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Other inductees that year included The Grateful Dead, The Band, Willie Dixon, and Bob Marley.
1996 - At a Versace Show with Husband David Furnish
John and his husband David Furnish fit in with the audience of fashion lovers observing the Versace Autumn/Winter 96/97 Haute Couture Collection debut.
1997 - Celebrating his 50th the Right Way
Elton John had a legendary Louis XIV-inspired look for his 50th birthday, accented with a massive powdered wig balancing a warship on-top, a long train, and a thousand more intricate details.
