Finally, we have an action thriller about a U.S. intelligence agent not named Jack. Say goodbye, Jack Ryan. Hasta luego, Jack Reacher. FBI agent Peter Sutherland is here. Played by Gabriel Basso (Hillbilly Elegy) in Netflix's newest action series, The Night Agent, Sutherland works as a Night Action telephone operator who discovers a mole within the highest levels of U.S. national security. Night Action indeed. Following its premiere on March 23, the series became Netflix’s third most-watched show of all time. Due to that success, The Night Agent will return for a second season with a new location and cast.

The Night Agent is based on author Mathew Quirk’s book of the same name. The show was originally planned to be a limited series, but fans can expect at least one more action-packed chapter. In an interview with Collider, Shawn Ryan, the series creator, spoke about where Season One left off. “I always knew that I wanted each season to be a mostly standalone story,” he said. “In this case, the center of gravity was Washington D.C and the White House, and it had this host of characters, but for the most part, we answered most questions and we’ve settled what happened in that. Hopefully, that’s a really satisfying journey for the audience.”

Now that Season Two has been confirmed, the story can go just about anywhere. Here's everything we know so far.

Where Will The Night Agent Season Two Take Place?

The next location for The Night Agent is under wraps, but in an exclusive conversation with Comicbook, Ryan said, “It does not take place in the DC area.” He continued, “We’ll be in a different part of the world exploring different characters than we had in Season One. And we're determining who from Season One might appear in Season Two. But essentially we're going to be telling a whole brand-new story, which is exciting and scary.”

With fans eagerly waiting to see what happens next, Ryan explained that his team is trying to make the second season just as thrilling as the first. “With the high bar that Season One set for audience expectations, we feel that pressure too,” he said. ‘And so we're just going to do our best to tell a story that feels within The Night Agent universe, but that feels new, fresh, and exciting."

What Could Happen in The Night Agent Season Two?

Not long after the show's premiere, Netflix quickly announced plans to renew the series for a second season, Deadline reported. There's only one problem: the limited series was based on a single novel, meaning that there's no more material to adapt moving forward.

In a previous interview with Deadline, Ryan bluntly said to fans begging for more story that, "the writers and I aren’t getting paid to figure [more seasons] out until it becomes official." After less than a week, the show was swiftly renewed. "I certainly have some ideas," Ryan continued. "I probably want to keep those to myself until the time comes. What I will tell you is that the initial pitch for this show that we sold to Netflix was that each season would tell its own, mostly self-enclosed, a beginning, middle and end story, and any future seasons would include a few but not most of the characters that we saw in the previous season." Potentially, there's no shortage of Night Agents.

Alongside the announcement of making a second season official, Ryan added, "the tremendous reaction to the show has been a great joy and is a credit to our cast, our writers, our directors, our crew, and our partners at Sony Pictures Television and Netflix. We couldn’t be any prouder or more excited to get cracking on Season Two to share the further adventures of Night Action with our newfound fans.”

What Characters Will Return in The Night Agent, Season 2?

If Netflix plans to make The Night Agent an anthology series, much like HBO's The White Lotus, it's possible that Gabriel Basso would only return in a limited capacity. He did end the first season with a potential new mission, but the series also starred Hong Chau—who was recently nominated by the Academy for her role in The Whale. Given her rise in acclaim and the success of spy thrillers on Netflix, there's no telling where the show could go next.

While speaking with Collider, Ryan added that Season Two would likely be in a “whole new location” with a couple of familiar faces, “but mostly new characters would be surrounding them.” As he plans the next chapter of The Night Agent, it seems as if Ryan is focused on keeping the storylines separate. “I wasn’t interested in doing a serialized thing and ending on some cliffhanger in Season One,” he said. “I think there’s only so much patience your audience has for all of that.”
