Funaria hygrometrica, also known as Bonfire Moss and Common Cord Moss, is one of the most common, weedy, and widely distributed mosses in the world. An acrocarpous moss, meaning it forms dense tufts or cushions. Can be found growing on newly exposed soil of abandoned agricultural land, disturbed habitats, campfire sites and other burned-over areas, and occasionally on wood or gravel. Grows well in full sun to light shade and on most substrates--soil, loam, sand and gravel will all work fine. It generally will not grow on rocks and logs unless they are covered with a thin layer of decayed organic material. Can handle dry environments but will thrive in moisture and humidity. Most growth occurs during the cool moist weather of spring. Great for terrariums, vivariums and fairy gardens.
