This is for sale of 2 small tubers or bulbs. Amorphophallus rivieri konjac are the easiest to grow and most cold-hardy of all the Amorphophallus and a good starter plant for the beginner. Yet it grows to be quite a large and spectacular looking plant with an impressive sinister-looking flower. It also produces some offset bulbs each year that can be detached and grown on as new plants each Spring.
This is a very easy exotic and tropical-looking plant that will grow practically anywhere in the garden or in planters or pots. My wife thinks it looks like an evil plant, but I think it looks cool. It definitely has 3 seasons of interest and will baffle gardening friends as to its identity. First a large maroon-purple shoot emerges in late spring, which can form a 3' tall pink-maroon ruffled spathe or flower. For only a day or so, it will smell like carrion to attract pollinating carrion flies. After pollination, a pod of blueish berries form. Then a second shoot emerges from the bulb to form a 24" to 72" purple-spotted stem ending in a giant leaf that unfurls into multi segmented elliptical leaflets This plant will last until the first frost. If you check the bulb at this point. you will find many offset bulbs that will become plants next fall, forming a nice clump of Voodoo Lilies. The seeds can also be germinated. As the bulb gets bigger, the plant and flower will get larger each year. Prefers part shade but can grow in full sun to deep shade. Can grow in moist conditions, even in standing water in summer. In late summer or fall, once it starts to die down, watering and fertilizer should be eliminated.
This aroid is rated as a zone 6a to 10b plant, but in zone 6a New York, I find they survive best in sheltered areas with well-drained soil. Wet winter soil will cause bulb to rot. Most of these bulbs and offsets I dig up after foliage dies down and store dry in plastic bags in a cool 40–50-degree spot or refrigerator and plant out when they begin to sprout in the spring. Extremely deer resistant.
