This fifth cemetery of the combined Jerusalem Congregation and Neue Kirche Congregation was built in 1870-72. The sandstone gate was erected in 1873. The cemetery has the size of 56,595 square meters, or about 14 acres. It is located in the flightpath of the now closed Berlin City Airport Tempelhof. Throughout the cemetery there are guiding lights for the air traffic.
Please note that the final resting places in Germany are not eternal, due to lack of space. This cemetery has a "period of repose" of 20 years. Once the time is up for a renewal of the "lease" the cemetery administration will place a small sticker on the gravestone to alert the family to contact the office of the cemetery. Unless the family of the deceased pays for another period of 20 years, or the grave is of historical importance (in that case the city of Berlin will carry the costs), it will be leveled and re-used. Leftover stones will be collected and eventually crushed and used as gravel in road construction.
To the north lies the now defunct old part of the St.-Thomas-Friedhof .
The chapel was built with plans by architect Louis Arndt in 1899/1900. Severely damaged during WW II it was rebuilt in it's original Gothic style. Currently (2008) it's the religious center of the small Bulgarian-Orthodox Church of Berlin.
The other Jerusalem and Neue Kirche cemeteries are:
Kirchhof Jerusalem und Neue Kirche I
Kirchhof Jerusalem und Neue Kirche II
Kirchhof Jerusalem und Neue Kirche III
Kirchhof Jerusalem und Neue Kirche IV
Kirchhof Jerusalem und Neue Kirche V
