Chymes Interview - Sassy and Powerful

We caught up with Chymes, one of Australia’s most promising pop acts. We delved into her most recent release ‘Sleepless’, the accompanying music video, plus more.

Futuremag Music: Hey Chymes, how're you going?

Chymes: Great, thank you!

Futuremag Music: Congratulations with the release of 'Sleepless'. Could you please provide some insight to the journey of writing and producing this track?

Chymes: I wrote this track with my producer Cameron Taylor and the amazing Maddie Crabtree (Muki) back in February this year and I really wanted to try something new and experiment a bit. It tells a story about selfishness in blurring the lines between friendship and relationship. But I wanted it to feel a bit contrasted with playful and upbeat melodies and production. It took months to get it into a place that felt right and had the right uplifting feel - like a sense of freedom from realising mistakes I guess - and ended up getting additional production from our good friend Aaron Lee (Airports) to take it to the next level. It’s such a fun track to listen to and to sing even though the lyrics are quite personal.

Futuremag Music: Could you please talk us through the 'Sleepless' music video? An ethereal dreamscape aura is present throughout. How did you create such an atmosphere?

Chymes: The music video was mostly filmed on my friends camcorder (and some digital too) to try to capture a home video / bedroom-y vibe. Because the song has a lot of emotions around confusion, I wanted the music video to be more simple in its imagery and have kind of a dream-like fantasy feel. Like you’re stuck in your own head, thoughts tossing and turning and jumping around. I did it all with my friend Shakirra Rees.

Futuremag Music: You'll be performing at Lost Paradise in December. Who are you keen to see at the festival? For those who haven't seen you in the flesh, what are some key things punters should look forward to in your set?

Chymes: Yes I’m so excited! I’m most excited to see Matt Corby I think... He is just *chefs kiss*.

Well, the set is quite upbeat this year… there’s going to be a lot of new unreleased tracks that will be coming in 2020 and they’re so fun and moody. All the new songs are quite personal and have had a lot of love and thought put in to each one. And they sound sick live!

Futuremag Music: To wrap it up, if the Chymes was a cocktail, what would be in it to best describe the project?

Chymes: Dreamy, moody, feminine, sassy, powerful, personal… So maybe it would be sweet and sugary in flavour, with cotton candy on top, but a dark moody grape juice colour (lol omg) with a lemon on the rim, and quite a few shots tossed in there to make it powerful haha!!
