Physocephala rufipes

Description

Body length 7 to 15mm. This Conopid has an extensive waist which is normally reddish in colour. The rest of the abdomen is blackish with some diffuse, yellowish rings. The legs are red and the wings have a darkened area towards the leading edge. The face is yellow with a black central stripe.

Habitat

Anywhere where bumblebees are in good supply, from grasslands to woodland edge and brown field sites. They are frequently found on thistles, knapweeds and ragworts.

Status and distribution

Fairly common and widespread in the southern half of England and Wales. Fairly common in Nottinghamshire and recorded twice at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

June to October.
