Reception October 1, 5-7pm

compendium (n): a brief summary of a larger work or field of knowledge; a collection of things, systematically gathered

Compendium presents a fresh survey of recent works from across New England. Artists were invited to submit up to three pieces made within the last two years, with no restrictions on media or theme. From a competitive pool of over 450 artworks, juror Lauren Szumita of the Fitchburg Art Museum selected seventy-five pieces by the seventy-three artists listed below. Selections were made blindly based on excellence of execution and originality of concept, encompassing a wide range of styles, subjects, and materials. Selected works include painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, ceramics, encaustic, fiber, collage, and assemblage. Scroll down to view artwork images.

  • “The artworks in Compendium reflect the creativity, innovation, and responsiveness of artists in our region. In these works, I see a time-honored commitment to forms and materials, but with the freedom to play and experiment. There are new perspectives on portraiture and the representation of the human figure. And in this age of technological acceleration, it was refreshing to see artists continue to take inspiration from the natural world with varying degrees of abstraction. In all, this exhibition presents a fresh look at ourselves and our world, with an interrogation of our histories, our environments, and our agency within.”

  • In her role at the Fitchburg Art Museum, Lauren Szumita oversees a rotating exhibition schedule featuring contemporary artists from New England as well as the museum’s permanent collection. Previously, she was the Curatorial Assistant of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the Worcester Art Museum. She received her MA in the History of Art and Architecture from the University of Oregon and BA in Art History from Boston College.
