With the final season of Fuller House on the horizon, mom of three and best-selling author Candace Cameron Bure knows a thing or two about having a busy schedule. Luckily, her beauty routine is blissfully straight-forward — a little mascara and a swipe of lipstick. During a rare lull in a frenetic day, Candace chatted with Good Housekeeping about aging, fitness, and her own definition of what it means to be beautiful.

On how she defined beauty as a pre-teen:

“As a child actor [playing D.J. Tanner on the television series Full House], I didn’t wear much makeup. I was supposed to look like an average kid. I was so excited around age 13 when I was able to start wearing lip gloss and eyeshadow. I always looked natural, but I loved wearing it.”

On who is truly "beautiful" to her:

“The most beautiful people in my life are the ones with the biggest hearts. It’s all about kindness, love, and compassion, and whoever exudes those qualities the most is incredibly beautiful."

"I always think of my mother and father, my grandmother and my children as the most beautiful.”

On celebrating strength and body positivity:

“I’m 44, and I love that I’m getting stronger physically as I get older. When I was younger and my focus was just on losing weight, I hated going to the gym. But now I love to lift weights and dance.”

“As a mom of three, body image is something I’m aware of. In my family, we place emphasis on being healthy and fit rather than on how your body looks.”

On her top beauty tips:

  • Emphasize the eyes: “If I had to pick one piece of makeup I couldn’t leave the house without, it would be mascara. It opens my eyes and makes me feel awake. My favorite brand is L’Oréal Paris Voluminous.”
  • Stay hydrated: “I try to drink a lot of water throughout the day. I take my 32-oz thermos with me everywhere and aim to drink two of those.”
  • Block the sun: “I have started to use driving sunscreen gloves for long road trips, to block the sun. It may look funny, but I would rather protect my skin!”
  • Get plenty of shut-eye: “I don’t like to get less than seven hours of sleep a night, especially if I am working. My goal is to get a minimum of eight hours, and if I can get nine, then I will take it.”
  • Show your joy: “Putting a smile on your face and thinking happy thoughts will make you look radiant. It simply changes you and makes you glow.”
