In Anspielung auf eine Meldung, die Keller in einer Züricher Zeitung las, und natürlich auf Shakespeares Tragödie beginnt die Erzählung:
"Diese Geschichte zu erzählen würde eine müßige Nachahmung sein, wenn sie nicht auf einem wirklichen Vorfall beruhte, zum Beweise, wie tief im Menschenleben jede jener Fabeln wurzelt, auf welche die großen alten Werke gebaut sind. Die Zahl solcher Fabeln ist mäßig; aber stets treten sie in neuem Gewande wieder in die Erscheinung und zwingen alsdann die Hand, sie festzuhalten."

So yes, considering the title of Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe (A Village Romeo and Juliet), I kind of already knew and even rather expected prior to even commencing with reading Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe that author Gottfried Keller would of course and sadly not very likely let his two main protagonists Sali and Vrenchen manage to live happily ever after.
And although I do well and fully understand the societal criticism reasons why there can not be a happily ever after conclusion in Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe, that Sali and Vrenchen have to suffer the same fate (death) as William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, this still did rather emotionally bother me when I read Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe for my comprehensive exams in 1996 (and yes, it still chafes and smarts a bit even now), and to tell the truth, it certainly has also negatively affected my personal enjoyment and potential reading pleasure. But yet, I do also realise that the tears shed at Sali and Vrenchen's fate are also and equally not only tears of sadness but also of catharsis and healing, and that of course Gottfried Keller actually kind of needed to have his lovers die in order to all the more vehemently condemn and criticise the social and economic conditions that many farmers in 19th century Switzerland were facing and the despair unto death this was often causing (for in reality, for yes, the plot of Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe is actually loosely based on a real and contemporary to Gottfried Keller Swiss couple who decided to kill themselves because they were unable to get married due to issues of poverty and family obligations).
Therefore, while I have personally and emotionally always considered Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe as much too depressing and sad a story for my own reading desires and tastes, I do both appreciate the reasons why Gottfried Keller's narrative is so inherently negative and I also realise that with regard to writing style, Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe truly is a shining gem of poetic realism, with beautifully elegiac language that is on the one hand emotional but also and thankfully devoid of either the sometimes overly exaggerated textual adornments of classicism or the intricate and often much too biting satires of the Enlightenment.

One of the few cases in which I liked the remake better than the original: In this major work of German-language poetic realism, Swiss author Gottfried Keller transports the star-crossed lovers to the Swiss countryside and turns the classic Renaissance drama into a piece of 19th century social criticism. Being the children of formerly respectable farmers who in the course of the story lose all their land and belongings because of a dispute springing from greed, 19-year-old Sali und 17-year-old Vrenchen fall in love, get married, and well, you know what happens then.
So why did Keller aim to re-work this classic tale? After reading a newspaper article about the children of poor farmers who rather wanted to be dead than to be separated, Keller felt that his novella would be an effort to remember their destiny, and to criticize social realities that lead to real-life tragedies. To achieve his goal, Keller employs beautiful, elegiac language full of symbolism and metaphors that remains – we’re dealing with German realism here – utterly free of kitsch.
First published in 1857 (but with a final draft dating from 1875), the text stirred some controversy during its time, especially regarding Keller’s ideas about morality and empathy, which becomes even clearer in case you read Jeremias Gotthelf’s Die schwarze Spinne (1842), an even-then popular tale in which Gotthelf propagates a completely different worldview illustrative of German Biedermeier.
In my quest to read more German classics, I will definitely go on to read some more 19th century realism!

I'm a bit surprised by the ratings here at Goodreads; I didn't think it was that bad! I quite liked it, even if it was predictable (especially so because the title is a direct reference to Romeo & Juliet). Except for the weird names, that is. Sali und Vrenchen? Really, Vrenchen? Of all the names in the world you decide to go with that one? Baffles me.

I always love a good retelling because spotting similarities and differences is a favorite of mine. Also, I like to think about the way a story is shaped by the time it is written in.
Now, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is a classic tragedy from the 16th century about star-crossed lovers. If I remember it correctly, Shakespeare also borrowed from an older text.
Keller's story features many of the original's characters as well as the overall story.

This is a German book for fairly advanced students of the language, or of interest to those who study German literature. It is not a particularly "fun" read, although it does have some passages which are good examples of flowery and passionate prose, and the overall story of doomed love between innocent youngsters may appeal to some. It does not in any way parallel the Shakespeare tale from which it takes its name, except in terms of the premise of two people falling in love in spite of their families' animosity. It is very "German" in structure, with lengthy sentences and multiple participles, and paragraphs that frequently extend over multiple pages. The antiquated vocabulary is explained to some degree in a (German language) glossary at the end, but any native English-speaker will find their German vocabulary taxed even by the more modern terms. It is probably best approached as a challenge to be overcome, one which is possible, but not easy, to succeed at.
I've probably said too much about the plot already, given the inexplicable goodreads proscription against "spoilers," but I will add that fairly little happens, outside of the heads and hearts of the main characters, except for the last few pages which finally move things to their inevitable climax. It serves as an excellent example of German romanticism in all its flaws and greatness.

As the name already implies, this is an adaptation of 'Romeo and Julia‘ by Shakespeare and I can only say that I‘m sooo happy that I finally managed to finish this classic - it was a torture if I‘m being honest🥲

che non hanno nulla da invidiare a quelli shakespeariani. I temi portanti della tragedia ci sono tutti, ma il valore aggiunto è dato dall'atmosfera bucolica che vi si respira e che, tra le due controparti, non vi sarà alcuna redenzione. Anzi l'autore - servendosi di una prosa agevole - metterà in risalto il lento e inesorabile declino delle due famiglie contadine, oramai sopraffatte dall'avidità.

Der Titel «Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe» wirft wohl bei vielen recht starke Erwartungen hervor und obwohl (Achtung Spoiler!) die Rahmenhandlung in etwa der von Shakespeares Werk entspricht, fällt die Adaption nicht kurz an Überraschungen, die jedoch nicht nur positiv sind.
Für mich wirkt das Buch weniger wie wichtige Schweizer Literatur, sondern mehr wie ein schlechtes TV-Drama, dass Sonntag nachmittags auf ZDF bei Oma zuhause im Fernsehen läuft. Manche Dialoge sind so schlecht geschrieben, dass ich mich wundere, ob der gute Herr Keller jemals in seinem Leben mit einem anderen Menschen gesprochen hat. Wenn Sali über seine Liebe zu Vrenchen redet, würde ich an Vrenchens Stelle aus Fremdscham den nächstbesten Stein nehmen und ihn ihm, wie er es auch bei ihrem Vater tuen wird, über den Kopf schlagen, damit er endlich mal Ruhe gibt. Selbst das wäre immer noch ein besseres Ende als es das Buch schlussendlich bekommen hat. Als ich 5 Seiten vor Ende des Buches war, fiel mir auf, dass die Beiden ja noch gar nicht tot waren und für ein Buch das «Romeo und Julia» im Titel hat, ist das natürlich problematisch. Dasselbe dachte sich wahrscheinlich auch Gottfried Keller und deshalb zauberte er sich für die letzten paar Seiten diese wahllosen Suizide aus dem Ärmel, welche bis auf den Titel keinen Uhrsprung in der Vorherigen Geschichte fanden.
«Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe» ist ein Buch, welches man nicht nur darum nicht mögen sollte, weil es eine Schullektüre ist, sondern auch weil man genau so gut ein besseres literarisches Werk (z.B. Schachnovelle) lesen könnte.

Auch wenn die Ähnlichkeiten mit dem "echten" Romeo & Julia erst im Laufe der Geschichte erkennbar werden, fand ich's wirklich toll! Die beiden hatten auch eine kleine Vorgeschichte und waren nicht wie bei Shakespeare nach 2 Minuten schon unsterblich ineinander verliebt, was für mich ein großer Pluspunkt war. Mir persönlich gefällt 'Kleider machen Leute' zwar immer noch besser, aber auch hier erkennt man den wunderbaren Schreibstil von Gottfried Keller.

Wie ein Märchen ohne Wunder und ohne Happy End. Zwei wohlhabende Bauern geraten in Streit über die Grenze ihre Äcker, verfeindeten sich und prozessierten endlos darüber. Über dem erbitterten Streit verarmten und verlotterten sie beide. Ihre Kinder aber, ein Sohn und eine Tochter, die vor dem Ausbruch des Streites miteinander spielten, behielten die Liebe zueinander und zehn Jahre später, als sie sich wiedersahen, setzten sie sich über die Feindschaft hinweg. Das Mädchen hatte gar nichts mehr und musste aus dem Haus, da alles versteigert wurde. Da gingen die beiden, einen schönen Sonntag miteinander zu verbringen und am Ende gingen beide ins Wasser.
Wer es bemerkt, da werden Dinge wie Bürgerrecht und Sans Papiers verarbeitet, das Durchgreifen der Gemeinde gegen Schuldiger und Hoffnungslosigkeit der Armen, die kaum Mitleid finden, da alle auf sie herabsehen und sich das Maul zerreißen.
Da in der Schweiz die Bürger die Finanzen der Kommune kontrollieren und Sozialausgaben der Gemeinde u.a. direkte Auswirkung auf die Steuerlast der Bürger der Gemeinde haben – jede Gemeinde bestimmt selbst über den Steuersatz der Bürger und indirekt damit über die Nachfrage nach Wohnraum und somit die Mieten – haben Einbürgerung, Sozialausgaben und dergleichen eine weit weniger abstrakte Auswirkung auf den Steuerzahler als in Deutschland. Und wie schändlich Teile des deutschen Volkes auf den gesetzlichen Inflationsausgleich der Grundversorgung der Ärmsten im Zuge der Einführung des Bürgerhartz4.1 reagiert haben, kann man sich vorstellen, dass Schweizer auch nicht mildtätiger sind. Gottfried Keller è uno scrittore con una vena poetica mirabile, che in questo racconto emerge spesso e incanta: vi sono descrizioni dei paesaggi svizzeri da incorniciare, scene di vita campestre pacifica e operosa, vi sono soprattutto dolcissime scene d’amore tra Vrenchen e Sali, i due Giulietta e Romeo svizzeri (Shakespeare poco c’entra se non come punto di riferimento per lo svolgimento della storia che richiama quella della rivalità tra le famiglie dei due innamorati culminata nella decisione di un amore eterno), che si conoscono da bambini giocando insieme nei campi dove accompagnano i rispettivi genitori, proprietari di due terreni limitrofi divisi da uno incolto, appartenente forse a un violinista folle e senza patria, che diventerà oggetto della discordia tra i capifamiglia, così forte da gettare le famiglie nella miseria e nel degrado. L’amore nascerà anni dopo, quando oramai l’odio tra le famiglie è diventato modo di vivere e di pensare, è un veleno che ha invaso il sangue degli adulti, fortunatamente lasciando che il sorriso e la stretta di mano di una bellissima fanciulla innamorata della vita e lo sguardo aperto e luminoso di un giovanetto inesperto alla vita ma aperto all’amore si incontrino candidamente ma anche sensualmente.
Questa è la parte dolce, romantica, la favola d’amore con purtroppo non il lieto fine. Ma vi è altro dietro le dolci scene di cui ho parlato. Vi sono significati e interpretazioni diversi che si intuiscono, alcuni, altri per me ben evidenti: quello che più è balzato alla mia attenzione è stato un passo in cui Keller parla della fiamma dell’onore che illumina le vite di chi operosamente lavora e pensa alla famiglia, quella fondata sul matrimonio, unione legittima di due persone che le inserisce a pieno titolo nella società (la opulenta e solida società borghese svizzera in cui lo scrittore non riuscì mai ad inserirsi); basta poco a spegnere la fiamma, basta il sorgere dell’avidità e dell’ansia di possesso, che in men che non si dica trasformano “l’insegna dell’onore nell’emblema della vergogna”. Anche la favola d’amore dei due giovani viene purtroppo fagocitata nella contrapposizione che assume esclusivamente connotati sociali e pertanto la soluzione finale dei due amanti, che non potranno mai sposarsi né hanno un lavoro, hanno una via di scelta obbligata per non finire tra gli emarginati, i senza patria che seguono il violinista folle: restare legati nel loro amore oltre la vita, lasciando che la fiamma dell’onore rimanga accesa non in questo mondo ma nelle acque profonde del fiume in cui nessuno li separerà.

I can kind of see where Keller is coming from and the man can certainly write, but boy am I sick of people making stupid decisions 'for luuuurv'.
(Also, I apparently still don't like the Romeo and Juliet story, not even in a 19th century variation.)

Manche Stellen des Buches waren wegen der veralteten Sprache relativ schwierig zu verstehen, aber im Großen und Ganzen handelt es sich um ein spannendes Buch, das die Werte und Dilemmen der damaligen Zeit gut widerspiegelt.

Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass Romeo und Julia im Kontext von Bauern in der Schweiz funktioniert, aber die Novelle hat mich eines Besseren belehrt. Zwar habe ich ihr nur drei Sterne gegeben, aber dennoch hat sie mir gut gefallen. Die Geschichte habe ich eher weniger beachtet, sondern mehr auf den Schreibstil geachtet, den der Autor genutzt hat. Wobei ich auch sagen muss, dass sich die Charaktere in dieser Novelle nicht 'einfach so' in einander verlieben, sondern miteinander aufwachsen und sich dadurch schon länger kennen als Romeo und Julia von Shakespeare. Die Geschichte basiert auf einer wahren Geschichte, die der Autor in einem Zeitungsartikel gelesen hat, allerdings finde ich, dass die Umsetzung mit der Titelgebung von Romeo und Julia doch auch andere Erwartungen weckt .
Vrenchen und Sali sind Namen, an die ich mich erstmal gewöhnen musste, aber je häufiger ich sie gelesen/gehört habe, desto weniger haben sie mich gestört.

It's astounding how much lies underneath the surface of Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe. At first reading, it seems to be nothing more than a typical Novelle, constructed on what is to be expected from Poetic Realism. One could find it too linguistically demanding, even boring and lenghty at times, but it takes just one little bit of patience to get accustomed to it, and once it takes off OMG it can't be stopped: the interwoven economic and social relations of the Swiss paesants Marti and Manz make up ground and environment of their social disgrace, which they inevitably inherit to their children Sali und Vrenchen, and the hopelessness this two see themselves subject to are the starting circumstances around which Gottfried Keller creates one of the most perfect narratives of German language literature. Individual and Nature become one, and then again, Nature remains indifferent to human existence, because the latter is no more than a finite gearwheel in its engine, finite and fleeting.

I absolutely loved this book; the language (admittedly a translation, but I shall be tracking down the original German A.S.A.P.) was simple yet beautiful, and the characters were so well-developed that I really invested in them, despite it being only 100 pages long. The title, and the synopsis, made the inevitable ending quite clear, but the fact is that the novella was based on a real event, and is not simply a parallel to Shakespeare's play. I thought that the reason for the lovers' suicide was well-explained and reasonable, although I was sorry that the book ended so soon; I will definitely be looking Keller up for future reading!

Es war auf jeden Fall lesbar, doch war es nicht immer ein Genuss. Die Szenen, in denen über die Liebe gesprochen wurde, fand ich großartig, sehr realistisch und nachvollziehbar. Auch dass sie durch ihre Väter derartig verdammt waren (Dieses Vaterschicksal erinnert teils auch an Kafka), fand ich wirklich anregend. Leider ist es nicht sehr fesselnd geschrieben, weshalb ich es auch derartig lange aus der Hand gelegt habe.
Hat mir aber auf jeden Fall besser gefallen als das „Original“ - vor allem der Schluss mit der kalten Erwähnung des Doppelsuizides.

Warum wir dieses Buch in der Schule lesen mussten, ist mir ein Rätsel. Weder habe ich irgendeinen Erkenntnisgewinn gehabt, noch fand ich es besonders sozialkritisch oder auf irgendeine andere Art und Weise relevant. Als schön oder berührend würde ich es auch nicht bezeichnen: Nach der Lektüre bin ich wortwörtlich eingeschlafen.

writing was def some different but okk, it was somehow weird idk ofc I kinda knew the ending, I liked some parts of it though and I Def didn't think that I would enjoy such a book, but it was nice to dive into another time period. But like the drowning at the end like frrr why didn't they just go with the Heimatlosen are u kidding me.
